Dear Parents and friends of GIS,
Welcome back to the second half ofthe long first term. Already we‟vebeen busy with Halloweencelebrations and the annual Scienceday, just this week. The costumeswere really gruesome this year withKaty in Year 10 deserving a specialmention for her creativity and skillwith tissue paper.
Thank you to all the parents whoreturned the „Home-SchoolAgreement‟. As explained, this is yetone more way that we aim toencourage a positive partnership withparents that is important topromoting the school‟s vision of“...empowering pupils to developtheir full potential.”
November will see us continue tobuild bridges as we invite parents to
join the Friends of Garden. This aimsto become an informal avenue fordiscussion and enable more parentsto voice their opinion in a supportiveand friendly environment. Later thismonth there will also be theopportunity to have your say in thefuture development plans for theschool.
Please read and enjoy the rest of thismonth‟s newsletter. As always, ifthere is anything that you wish todiscuss further please do not hesitateto contact me.
Warmest regards,
Jeremy Stokes MA Ed.

Hallowe’en was celebrated on Wednesday 31st October throughout the schoolwith children from Early Years up to our oldest in Year 11 dressing up as a mixtureof vampires, witches and other, less frightening characters. Many pupils alsospent time beforehand carving terrifying faces into various types of fruit.
Year 6 vampires
Everyone in the First School dressed up Year 5 glammed it up
Lots of Year 3 witches and wizards

Did Year 4 look any scarier than normal?Teenage zombies (as well as a cuddly dinosaur and a dazed Mr. Stokes)
Year 5 were a gruesome bunch
Vampires and witches everywhere...
Pirates, pixels and blood too... Even our oldest pupils made the effort!

Science day was another opportunity to look at all the ‘magical’ and excitingthings that can be done with a little bit of scientific know-how. From bubblemaking to the forces involved in Dracula opening his coffin; creating volcanoesand slimy goo with kitchen ingredients; making ghosts dance to colourful patternsin milk, the Early Years to Year 6 teachers used innovative materials and ideas tobring the ‘magic’ of science to life.

The Secondary department were called in to help the FBI with a baffling case thatrequired the students to use their scientific know-how in areas reminiscent of aCSI show. Blood spatter tests, fingerprint and fibre analyses, shoeprintmeasurements and tests for medical conditions all figured in identifying theindividual who committed the crime and providing evidence to support theircase. Each group worked methodically and demonstrated excellent team-workingskills.It was great to see that all the groups came to the same conclusion and wereable to back it up with hard evidence. Guilty!

Year 10 and 11 IGCSE
student artists visited
artists at V64 studio
galleries 10th October
2012
V64 is a collaboration of 72 artists who exhibit and create art inLaksi. We interviewed the artists, sketched the art in the galleries, made close-up careful studies of techniques and completed aworkshop in Expressive-action painting.Meeting real artists (as opposed to researching them online or inbooks) we were able to see Fine artists living and working in theirstudios. We gained an insight into their daily lives. Some of theartists were actually painting or sculpting so we could watch theirtechniques and the artists we interviewed gave us an explanation oftheir ideas and inspiration. The workshop was directed by two Expressionist artists Kitti Narodand Boonchai Wedmakhan. We were encouraged to be ourselves, sharing some of our experiments. We expressed emotion thoughaction mark-making and by experimenting with the different typesof paint and mixed media.

• Please remember that swimming is a vital life skill and childrenlearn best when they get regular practice. Parents are key toensuring that their children have the correct kit each and everyweek: this includes swimming clothes, a towel and goggles, all withyour child’s name on to prevent them becoming lost.
• Another reminder that the School Uniform Policy calls for all pupilsto wear smart, black shoes and to bring trainers for P.E. and outsideplay in a bag. Please support the school dress code and ensure yourchild has the appropriate footwear.
