Workboats and oil spill cleanup vessels
PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH INNOVATION
Our belief
evidence has shown that, when there is marine pollution, it is important to treat pollutants and spills upstream as early as possible, before they damage the coastline.Despite this, recent studies have found that:“Despite the significant means employed, very few - if any - hydrocarbons are recovered at sea.”This inefficiency severely impacts the environment, making clean-up operations difficult and causing serious damage to the coastline.
Our task
This is why, for the last 10 years, ECOCEANE has focused its energies on researching, developing, building and marketing its patented, versatile vessels. These vessels are designed to recover hydrocarbons and solid floating waste at sea.
research anD Design
The company’s facilities include an engineering design office and a shipyard that specialises in aluminium and metal construction. The shipyard and design office are first and foremost a research and development laboratory, dedicated to manufacture and to test effective ways of fighting marine pollution.
innOVatiOn
ECOCEANE’s innovative technology makes it possible to recover all types of floating and liquid waste (hydrocarbons).
sOlutiOns
Our solutions cover ports, coastlines, lakes and rivers, the oil industry, and ocean-going and polar operations. All of our vessels, ranging from 7 to 46 metres in length, are equipped with our revolutionary technology. Each vessel is adapted to the needs of a particular environment and a specific type of operation.
sprEADiNg Of hyDrOCArbONs
hydrocarbons that are lighter than water spread very rapidly on the surface. it is therefore essential to intervene as soon as possible.
EmulsiON
When hydrocarbons and water are mixed, air molecules are imprisoned, forming a combination of oil + water + air with the consistency of thick salad dressing. This change in the pollutant makes recovery more complex because it increases the density and viscosity. This phenomenon is mainly generated by pumping thin hydrocarbon slicks in water. The viscosity of this emulsion, which is difficult to treat, explains the low efficiency of existing systems.
Without early intervention, the only thing standing in the way of hydrocarbons is the coastline. The environmental consequences of such an event and its impact on the local population have led us to develop effective solutions for collection at sea.

ABC Of TACkliNg pOlluTiON
Once an oil slick alert has been issued, the priority is to collect the pollutant as early and as close to the emission source as possible.
Objective 1: Versatilityin order to be financially viable, cleanup vessels must be able to be used for other maritime activities when not required for cleanup operations.
Objective 2: speed of deploymentin order to be efficient and limit the areas requiring treatment, pollution cleanup vessels must be deployed to affected areas as quickly as possible.
Objective 3: effective pollutant collectionThere are many different types of hydrocarbon and floating waste; collection vessels must therefore be capable of working quickly and in difficult conditions.
Objective 4: Preventing the formation of emulsionEmulsion limits collection capacity to 5m3/hour.
Objective 5: evacuating the pollutant from the siteEvacuating pollutants must not hinder the cleanup operation.
Objective 6: Protection of peopleA cleanup operation must not adversely affect the health of those carrying out the operation.

The contextof Recovery at sea
> A risky situation
The increase in global energy demand causes oil companies to multiply offshore extraction sites in regions that have so far been preserved.Sea and river transport, which is the most economical form of transport, is increasing every year.Rivers flowing into seas and oceans are often polluted. The risk of accidental pollution follows this trend in an exponential way. These changes, which are obligatory for the economies of the countries concerned, have grave consequences for the environment.
> Raised awareness
Following major oil spills in the 1970s, some countries established organisations to combat marine pollution. Pollution cleanup tools were put into place. Although they are not very effective, these systems of recovery at sea have not changed since. The main reason for this low efficiency is the emulsion phenomenon caused by pumping hydrocarbons in the presence of water. This technological stagnation has harmful consequences for the environment, which are also costly for the economy.
45
> A fresh perspective
After 10 years of research and development, Ecoceane’s design office has developed a complete and consistent range of 7 to 46 metre vessels adapted for all environments. It has its own shipyard, which enables it to design and build prototypes. The plans, created with Dassault Systèmes’ CATIA software, can be used to provide any shipyard with the manufacturing drawings and electronic cutting drawings for the parts required to build the vessels. The hydrocarbons, recovered without creating an emulsion, are stored afloat, and in the case of major pollution, transferred continuously to tankers or barges, which can be used in rotation to allow recovery of unlimited quantities. Our ships work at speeds of 4 knots, in winds of up to and including force 6, cleaning a surface of up to 60,000 sq.m. per hour, and are more than 20 times more efficient than existing systems.
> A profitable model
Our vessels combine protection of the environment with economic profitability. They are true autonomous recovery stations, and can be used as barges, workboats or supply vessels when not used for cleanup operations. Ecoceane has developed 3 ranges of pollution cleanup and work vessels, - Cataglop: For ports, close onshore work, rivers and canals... - Workglop: for the oil industry, coastal work, large rivers and lakes...- Spillglop: for ocean-going standby, persistent pollution…Our current research concerns hydrocarbon recovery in the Arctic environment and the integration of our technique in warships.
> A challenge on the planetary scale
Ecoceane is a multipurpose ship designer, (work, cleaning and pollution cleanup vessels), with its own design office and an integrated shipyard for prototype construction.Ships are built using our own technology in co-operation with local partners in every region of the world.

Deploying four Spillglop 250 vessels during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster would have cost less than 1/1000th (one thousandth) of the actual cleanup cost. These vessels would have been capable of cleaning up all of the hydrocarbons, by avoiding the need for dispersants which have as yet unknown environmental consequences. These vessels could have worked as supply vessels for the oil industry before and after the cleanup operation.

Workboats
Accidents, by definition, occur at random and are always associated with an exceptional set of circumstances. It is therefore impossible to predict the nature, place, time and magnitude of an accident. Pollution control equipment must be permanently available, while being put to profitable use in the periods between cleanup operations.
ECOCEANE has created ranges of versatile boats, which are both fully operational workboats and exceptionally high yield cleanup and pollution control vessels that are ready to respond at any time.
Our boats represent a profitable business model during on-watch periods.
Depending on the range, each vessel is a genuine barge, workboat or supply vessel. They perform the full range of port, oil industry or ocean-going tasks (personnel and cargo transport, harbour pilotage, diving support, fire-fighting, etc.)
Cleanup and Pollution controlWherever our vessels are deployed, they are always ready to respond should cleanup or pollution control be required.
ProfitabilityVersatility
Objective n°1
89
Since our vessels can be fully integrated into the maritime economy, our system is always available on various water sites.
Our versatile vessels have been constructed with all the necessary equipment for collecting hydrocarbons at sea, without creating emulsion.
They are always available to respond when needed, with a dedicated crew and without the need to return to their home port to collect equipment.
They work like genuine “hoovers” on the surface of the sea, operating at 4 knots in winds of up to Force 6, collecting 80 to 150m3 of pollutants per hour.
The recovered hydrocarbons are continuously transferred to tankers, which do not require any conversion to take the hydrocarbons.A rotating storage arrangement means that the recovery capacity is unlimited.

Speed
Each disaster has its own unique location and set of circumstances.Areas such as oilfields, the high seas, the coastline, ports, lakes and rivers, must be protected at all times.Rapid response is therefore critical, meaning that cleanup vessels must be on site as quickly as possible.

The self-floating arms are connected to the boat by a rotating shaft, which enables them to ride the waves independently of the boat.
• All of the surface pollutants trapped by the arms (1) are aspirated into the boat.
• Our system is capable of operating at 4 knots in winds of up to Force 6. At this speed, the ECOCEANE boat can be followed by a supply vessel or oil tanker, to which it can transfer the recovered hydrocarbons on a constant basis.
there are many different types of hydrocarbons and floating waste, therefore collection equipment must be capable of working quickly and in difficult conditions.
C) thE ECOCEANE SOlutION
B) dISAdvANtAgES
These two factors limit the speed of the vessels to 1 knot, restricting their use to maximum wind speeds of Force 3.
The thin layer of hydrocarbons trapped by the arms mixes with water during pumping, creating an emulsion (mayonnaise) which requires treatment in a hopper prior to storage.
Cross-section: the hydrocarbons trapped between the arms undergo an overpressure/vacuum effect. A current is generated, which sucks the hydrocarbons from the surface below the sweeping arms.
Top view: The water in front of the arms acts as a mass and diverts the flow towards the end of the arms, creating an acceleration and a Venturi effect, which diverts the hydrocarbons to the outside of the arms.
Sweeping arms are fitted on either side of the vessel to capture the oil slicks and thicken them.

A turbine pulls a stream of water through a chamber equipped with a mesh (2) that filters out all solid waste.
From the chamber, the flow is separated into two parts:• Flow 1: The turbine pumps away the clean water.• Flow 2: Surface water, polluted with oil and hydrocarbons, is channelled into a separator (3) where the hydrocarbons
are stored floating on the water. No emulsion forms, and the hydrocarbons are transferred immediately to a tanker.

Pumping of thin hydrocarbon films, mixed with water, creates a “mayonnaise-like” emulsion. (this treatment limits collection capacity to 5m3/hour).
B ) dISAdvANtAgES
The collection speed is limited by the time required to heat the emulsion from ambient temperature to 35°C, while ensuring that the heat source does not exceed the oil flash point (60°C).
The emulsion treatment process therefore restricts the hydrocarbon sweeping process – regardless of the pump power – to less than 5m3 per hour.
pumping of thin hydrocarbon layers produces an emulsion (mayonnaise), which is highly viscous (350,000 centistokes). pumps which are only capable of handling 100,000 cSt must therefore be modified and fitted with a hot water belt to make transit more fluid. This makes transfer difficult. The emulsion produced cannot be transferred directly into storage tanks because it is too viscous. it must be heated in a hopper to 35°C to separate the hydrocarbons from the water.
uSE OF hOPPERS
• the emulsion enters the tank (1) at ambient temperature.
• the hopper is fitted with heating coils which must not exceed 60°C (oil flash point).
• Once the tank is filled with emulsion, it is heated to 35°C; at this temperature the mixture separates into water and oil (2).
• the resulting water still contains hydrocarbon particles and can only be released back into the polluted area.
• the remaining hydrocarbons are stored in the tanker.

• The integral skimmer floats in the water, with the pump suction placed in the hydrocarbons• Once all the hydrocarbons in the chamber have been transferred, the loss of level instantly stops the pump. The pump
starts again once a new layer of hydrocarbons has been recovered.
if the recovered pollution is already emulsified by the environment, it cannot be transferred. if the separator is filled with emulsion, it is isolated and heated by means of keel cooling and a generator to separate the hydrocarbons from the water.

The tankers used in spill cleanup operations normally have a storage capacity of 500 to 1,500m3. At best, in theory, with 24-hour pumping, their tanks will be filled within 1 to 2 weeks. The tankers would then have to abandon the cleanup operation to return to port, empty the tanks and return to the site.
The cleanup boat has to leave the site for several days.
• ECOCEANE vessels act as genuine suction heads, capable of 24/24 cleanup and pollution control work.• The recovered hydrocarbons are continuously transferred to tankers or barges, on a rotating basis, providing
unlimited recovery capacity.• As no special conversion of the tankers is required, all available tankers can take part in the evacuation of
