Definition of Computer

Computer is a advance electronic device

that manipulate information/data. It has

the ability to retrieve and process data.

It can perform Arithmetic and Logical

calculation.

1st Generation

Of Computer

1st Generation Computer

The first generation computers were from 1940-156.

It was made up of Vacuum Tubes which were used for circuitry

and for memory.

It was expensive to operate.

It consumed lots of electricity.

It was bigger in size , it occupied a room space

Due to vacuum tubes it generate lot of heat.

UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of first-generation computing

It was developed by two scientists Mauchly and Echert

Limitation Of 1st Generation Computer

It was large in size.

It consumed large amount of electricity.

Operating of computers were costly.

It’s maintenance was costly.

It was not portable.

2nd Generation

Of

Computer

2nd Gneration Of Computer

Due to technology of transistor in 1947 at Bell lab ,it lead

to development of 2nd Generation of computers.

It was continued from 1956-64.

It was made up of transistors.

It was better than 1st generation computers.

It was faster than previous computers.

It consumed less electricity due to use of transistor.

Limitation of 2nd Generation Computer

It was required cooling system.

It was only for specific purpose.

It was costly.

It was not portable.

3rd Generation

Of

Computer

3rd Generation Computer

Due To development of IC in 1958-59 By Noyce and

Kilbay lead to development of Third Generation

Computer.

It was continued from 1964-72.

It was faster than other generation computer

It’s speed was in nanosecond.

It was smaller in size.

It was portable.

It consumed very less electricity.

Limitation of 3rd Generation Computer

Due to use of IC highly sophisticated technology was

required.

Still required Cooling system.

It was cheaper but not for home use.

4th Generation

Of

Computer

4th Generation Of Computer

It was from 1972-84.

This generation of computer used Large Scale Integration(L.S.I.) and Very Large

Scale Integration(V.L.S.I.).

The storage capacity was very much increased.

This generation computers were very user user friendly.

Processing speed was 1 billion instruction per second.

Comparatively smaller in size and greater reliability.

5th Generation

Of

Computer

5th Generation Of Computer

The fifth generation computers will use super large scale integrated chips.

They will have artificial intelligence

They will be able to recognize image and graphs.

They will be able to use more than one CPU for faster processing

speed.

Fifth generation computers are intended to work with natural

language.

Fifth generation computer aims to be able to solve highly complex problem including decision making, logical reasoning
