The North Carolina Stage
Before you begin to explore the stories of North Carolina’s past, you should get to know something about the state’s geography. It has been said that if history were a play, geography would be the stage. Think about it. North Carolina’s history would have been entirely different if the state were an island in the middle of an ocean or a desert land far from water. North Carolina’s
mountains, rivers, soil, coastline, and climate have had profound effects on the state’s history.
North Carolina’s RegionsNorth Carolina’s “stage” varies a great deal. From the coastal marshes, to the
rolling hills and farms, to the beautiful mountains, the state’s geography is diverse. Geographers divide areas into regions—places that share common features. There are three main land regions in North Carolina: the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, and the Mountains. Each region has unique physical
features that give North Carolina a varied landscape. Each region also has unique human features. People across the state use the land for different things. Where people choose to live, how they move from place to place, what they do for a living or for fun can all be affected by the environment
around them. Human activities, in turn, have their own effects on the environment.
