Smart Core and Core Graduation PathsCore Graduation Math Requirements•4 Units– One (1) unit of Algebra or equivalent [Algebra A&B]– One (1) unit of Geometry or equivalent [Geometry A&B]– All math units must build on the base of algebra and

geometry knowledge and skills.– Comparable concurrent credit courses may be substituted

where applicable.http://www.arkansased.org/public/userfiles/Legal/Legal-Current%20Rules/ade_282_standards_0709_current.pdf

NOTICE: Changes in the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship requirements mandate that students graduating in 2014 and beyond must graduate under Smart Core.

Smart Core and Core Graduation PathsSmart Core Graduation Math Requirements•4 Units [at least one unit must be gained in either 11th or 12th grade]

– Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II must all be completed*– One unit above and beyond Algebra II

• Advanced Topics and Modeling in Mathematics• Algebra III• Calculus• Linear Systems and Statistics• Mathematical Applications and Algorithms• Pre-Calculus• College Board AP Math Courses**• International Baccalaureate Courses**• Concurrent Math Courses

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)

• Accessing the Common Core State Standards:

www.corestandards.org

• While there are other sites out there that are related to the CCSS, www.corestandards.org is the official site.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)

• How to read the CCSSM– Grade level standards are categorized by 3

different groupings or “grain sizes”• Standards – define what students should understand

and be able to do.• Clusters – are groups of related standards.• Domains – larger groups of related standards.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)

• How to read the PARCC Model Content Frameworks (MCF) http://www.parcconline.org/parcc-model-content-frameworks

– The MCF provides the following information:• Individual end-of-course overviews• Examples of key advances from previous grades or courses• Discussion of Mathematical Practices in relation to course content• Fluency recommendations• Pathway summary table• Assessment limits table for standards assessed on more than one

end-of-course test.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)

• The MCF identify course specific emphasis for the standards

• Course emphases include:– Major Content– Supporting Content– Additional Content

• How to read our state produced Algebra A/B, Algebra I, Geometry A/B, Geometry, and Algebra II documents.

• Mirrors the information and groupings found in the CCSSM and the PARCC Model Content Frameworks

Sample Theme

Geometry & Geometry A/B• Reminders:– Pre-requisite of Algebra I or Algebra A/B– Approval Renewals– Content has moved around/down– Teach the content of the course

Geometry & Geometry A/B• Suggestions:– Schools need to have a plan to properly identify

and place students in Geometry or Geometry A/B at the 5-8 level.

– Though Geometry A/B is an available option right now, schools need to help students and parents make informed decisions that are in the best interest of the student.

SmartCore and the Academic Challenge Scholarship

• Students should be reminded of eligibility changes for the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship, which require students graduating in 2014 and beyond to graduate under Smart Core.

Geometry & Geometry A/B• Sequencing:– What about our February of 2012 recommendation?

• Algebra I -> Algebra II -> Geometry or

• Algebra I -> Geometry -> Algebra II

– Suggested sequencing based on PARCC approved college and career readiness determination:• Algebra I -> Geometry -> Algebra II

Geometry & Geometry A/B• Sequencing– How does the new Bridge to Algebra II (BTAII) fit

in?• Before Geometry, concurrently with Geometry, or after

Geometry but before Algebra II• Quick reminder BTAII DOES NOT count as a fourth math

credit under SmartCore!

Geometry & Geometry A/BFramework Documents (3) for Geometry, Geometry A, & Geometry B– Geometry• Committee based development• Familiar form• Precise language• PARCC alignment

Geometry & Geometry A/B– Geometry A & Geometry B• Two separate documents• Committee was charged to not simply lop the

standards in half, but to consider:– What standards could stand alone in each course– What standards should span both courses– The emphasis of each standard in each course and how that

emphasis changed.

Geometry & Geometry A/B– Geometry & Geometry A/B• The committee worked to “unpack” the standards and

place them within themes or umbrellas of instruction.• We have included those themes as an appendix to the

documents.

Geometry & Geometry A/BGeometry A & Geometry B (Themes overview)–Frame for local planning–Incorporates PARCC Model Content Frameworks Emphases–Optional not Prescriptive

Geometry & Geometry A/B• In the spring of 2013, a committee composed

of Arkansas educators categorized each standard into themes, which could frame the sequencing or organization of the content. – Congruence and Similarity– Circles– Dimensional Geometry

be valid high school math course offerings beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.
