THE STORY OF A DREAM

The story of Lladró is the dream of three brothers, Juan, José and Vicente Lladró, and their passion for porcelain.

This passion led them to build a small Moorish kiln in 1953 in the backyard of the house where they were born, in the village of Almàssera. Here is where they fired their very first pieces.

Today, very close to that family workshop, now stands The City of Porcelain, the headquarters of the company and the place where all Lladró creations are born. From here they travel to the homes of porcelain lovers in over 120 countries on the five continents.

Though it is now a multinational, Lladró has always been a family-run enterprise. Juan Lladró, the elder of the three founding brothers, has been at the helm since 2007 together with his daughters Rosa and Ángeles.

UNIQUE ARTISAN PROCESSES:CREATION

All Lladró pieces are handcrafted at the brand’s workshops in The City of Porcelain, following a completely artisan process.

From the initial sketches to the firing in the kiln at high temperatures, each step is taken by artists and artisans working under the direct supervision of the Lladró family.

Using the techniques of modeling in clay or in plasticine, the sculptor creates the initial sketch, which is then reproduced in plaster, adding all the details, textures and features that will end up in the final piece.

Once the model has been completed, it is divided into as many fragments as required so that it can then be reproduced in porcelain. A mold is taken from each fragment and these are filled with liquid porcelain paste to create the different parts of the figurine. Afterwards, skilled artisans recompose the piece, using porcelain paste as an adhesive.

With a steady hand, Lladró painters carefully apply the colors using techniques learned over many years of experience. They delicately profile the tiniest details and bring the faces of the sculptures to life.

Finally, the sculpture is put to the test of fire in the kiln. After more than twenty hours of firing at high temperatures, the porcelain vitrifies, the varnish crystallizes and the true Lladró colors, which remained hidden until now, come to the surface.

Without a doubt, its flowers are one of the most distinguishing elements of Lladró sculptures. Each individual flower is also made and painted completely by hand, following a painstaking process. Specialized artists set the petals one by one in order to ensure truly impressive results. And this is why each Lladró flower is unique and unrepeatable.

Once painted, the sculptures which will have a gloss finish are covered with a coat of varnish, which will give them Lladró’s signature crystalline texture.

DECORATION AND THE TEST OF FIRE

A UNIVERSAL WORK IN CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION

Lladró has never stopped exploring new paths. The range of its extensive catalogue runs from its classic pastel colored, gloss figurines to more sculptural pieces, not forgetting functional creations or the monumental pieces in High Porcelain, the brand’s maximum artistic category.

At the same time, Lladró has contributed to the art of porcelain by developing its own techniques and coming up with new processes that have revolutionized this discipline.

With an artisan process that elevates the value of the unique to its maximum expression, one could say that in Lladró know-how is put at the service of creativity, thus contributing to the culture of porcelain.

Lladró’s varied and continuously evolving work is also the expression of everything good and beautiful in life. This explains why it has millions of lovers on the five continents and why its pieces are so highly appreciated in homes across the globe.
