Joseph Richey first opened its doors in 1987.
The hospice was named for the Rector of Mt. Calvary Church, Joseph Richey, who served in the late 1800’s. Mt. Calvary is one of the founders of
Joseph Richey.
In November, 2014 Joseph Richey joined together with Gilchrist Hospice
Care.

compassionate, holis/c, pallia/ve care for terminally ill adults and children by offering care in a
spirit of service, hospitality and mutual respect, without regard to race, creed, diagnosis or
ability to pay.

71 African American pa/ents, 58 Caucasians, 1 Asian and 1 Hispanic Pa/ent
67 pa/ents from Bal/more City, 41 pa/ents from Bal/more County and pa/ents from Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County and the Eastern Shore

Most of our pa/ents do receive Medicare benefits, although
Medicare does not pay for the cost of room and board (an average of
$4,400 per pa/ent).
10% have no insurance at all
60% cannot pay for their room and board
Uncompensated care costs are $1.2 million annually

Joseph Richey is the only residen/al hospice in the State of Maryland.
Joseph Richey provides a rouOne level of care while our inpa/ent units at Towson and Howard County provide
acute inpa/ent care.

RYAN WHITE OBJECTIVES: HOSPICE CARE
Provide comprehensive, high quality residen/al and acute care hospice services, including cri/cal
pain and symptom management
Assure staff and volunteers are adequately trained in HIV/AIDS care, especially in delivering pain and symptom management, and have a high
regard for cultural sensi/vi/es.
Increase access to hospice services and op/mize health outcomes for HIV/AIDS pa/ents who are eligible for hospice by providing care for those who are uninsured or underinsured and might not otherwise have access to adequate care at
end-‐of-‐life

RYAN WHITE OBJECTIVES: PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE
Address the complex emo/onal, psychological and rela/onal issues for end-‐stage HIV/AIDS pa/ents by providing supplemental counseling
through Ryan White funding.
Assure that the HIV/AIDS pa/ents cared for are central to their own care planning and treatment
as the leader of the Care Team and that addi/onal family/friends receiving psychosocial
support are integral to the process
Reduce new HIV/AIDS incidence through educa/on of visi/ng affected and infected family/
friends of the HIV/AIDS pa/ents cared for by Joseph Richey, as opportune and appropriate.
