Preface
Centre for Environment Education (CEE), established in 1984 as a Centre of Excellence of the
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, works throughout India
on innovative educational programmes for a range of sectors from children and schools to
communities, governments and senior decision makers. The programmes of CEE cover themes and
key initiatives of the Government of India. Projects are also undertaken in partnership and co-
financed through a number of agencies including State Governments, CSR initiatives and others.
2017 has seen new partnerships with CEE participating in many important and large scale National
programmes. These included our work with the National Clean Ganga Mission in March organising
the Swachhata Pakhwada in over 17 cities in the 5 states through which the Ganga flows, a major
effort that involved forging local level partnerships and overseeing the involvement of large
numbers of people.
Towards the end of March we started working on a major campaign 'Jal Jeevan Hai' for NABARD, a
campaign to reach out to 100,000 villages to promote the efficient use of water for agriculture. CEE
helped develop this campaign and the strategy where we felt that it was important that each
village was approached by a team rather than through media alone. The personal contact as well as
the ability to structure the programme using local resources proved very important. A programme
which involved training nearly 8000 Krishi Jal Doots and 200 Master trainers was undertaken and in
a matter of 3 months, this task was accomplished and they are now in the process of collating the
feedback.
In June, a special event was planned to mark the centenary of the Sabarmati Ashram by launching a
book and curating an exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi's years at the Ashram. The National Archives of
India had taken up the responsibility of this exhibition and book. The work was assigned to CEE and
one of the tasks was to relate much of what Gandhi said and stood for, with the current initiatives of
the Government, as a form of Karyanjali to the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. This was done through
designing innovative exhibits and we were very fortunate to have the Hon'ble Prime Minister of
India, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurate this exhibition.
During this period several major programmes were undertaken. Our work on the interpretation
project in Tilabari, West Bengal was completed. CEE took up the design and installation of the
exhibition at the Kokrebellur Bird Sanctuary in Karnataka as well as several minor ones elsewhere in
the country. Our work on the Swachchhata Abhiyan saw a major thrust through our partnership with
Adani Foundation and the Swachhagraha programme has gone to 11 States from being
implemented in just the state of Gujarat in its first year.
This booklet provides glimpses of the programmes undertaken during the first half of 2017.

Centre for Environment Education (CEE) was established in 1984 as a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Education of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India.
CEE's primary objective is to improve public awareness and understanding of environmental and developmental issues with a view to promoting action for the conservation and sustainable use of nature and natural resources. To this end, CEE develops innovative programmes and educational material, and builds capacity in the field of environmental education and education for sustainable development. It undertakes demonstration projects in education, communication and development that endorse environmentally sustainable attitudes, strategies and technologies. CEE is committed to ensuring that due recognition is given to the role of education in the promotion of sustainable development.
