Note- a passing grade in the lab is a prerequisite for passing the course.

Attendance

You are required to attend all labs and lectures. While we will not be taking role call each morning

you can expect as many as 5 unannounced quizzes during the semester that will cover, in part, material present in class and not covered

explicitly in the text books or show on PowerPoint presentations posted to Black Board. There will be no make ups for missed quizzes or exams

unless the student has contacted the instructor before hand.

Field trip to Mojave Desert/Death Valley

When: October 21st through October 25th

Why: Because there is no substitute for seeing geology in the field.

Do you have to go?: No, if you do go (and I strongly encourage each of you to go) you will be excused from three labs and you will be able to substitute one of the papers for a written discussion of the geology observed

during stops on the trip. You will still be required to sit in on all the lab instruction but you will not have to complete

excused lab exercise.

We will be camping during the trip (4 nights) and weather may be quite variable (hot to cold and windy, rain is very

unlikely). Much more on this to follow.

Term Papers 6 to 8 pages, double-spaced on a pre-approved topic.

When: 1st term paper: First draft is due on September 30th. The final draft will be due October 16th. You must also find two students to review your manuscript and you will

need to review two others. All reviews must be turned in at the time the final draft is due.

2nd term paper: If you do not attend the field trip in October, you will need to write a 2nd 6 to 8 page term

paper. You will need to choose a topic by October 28th and the final draft is due on December 2nd.

A list of topics can be found on the last page of the syllabus.

Pick your topic by September 2nd- First come, first server.

CHEATING

Cheating is defined as attempting to represent another’s work as your own.

The consequences for cheating will range from receiving a zero on the paper, lab, or exam to failing the course as

well as discipline assigned by the department/college/university.

We can assure you that the benefits are just not worth the potential consequences and we will be actively looking for

evidence of cheating.
