On March 20, 1854, Alvan E. Bovay organized
a very important meeting in Ripon, Wisconsin.
Bovay united discouraged members of the Free Soil,Conscience Whigs & Anti Nebraska Democrat Parties.
They formed the first Republican Party.

The first local GOP was formed in RiponWisconsin on March 20, 1854.
The first State GOP was formed in Jackson,Michigan on July 6, 1854.
The first National GOP Convention was held inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1856.

National Republican History-OurFirst Presidential Candidate
Famous Explorer John Charles Fremont was thefirst Republican candidate for President.
Although an unsuccessful Third Party candidate,Fremont managed to receive 1/3 of the vote
against the winner Democrat James Buchanan.

National Republican History-The First Team Player
A little known fact is that in 1864 disgruntledRepublicans offered Fremont a nomination forPresident against Lincoln.
After considering the matter, he declined theirrequest, saying in his letter of withdrawal that hedid so "not to aid in the triumph of Mr.Lincoln, but to do my part toward preventing
the election of the Democratic candidate."

In 1896, the GOP was the first Major Party insupport of Womens Suffrage.
When the 19th Amendment was added to theConstitution, 26 of 36 State Legislatures ratifyingwere in under GOP Control.

Abolishing Slavery & ElectingAfrican Americans
Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation and the
passage of the 13th Amendment by a RepublicanCongress abolished slavery.
Republicans passed the Civil Rights Acts of
1866 recognizing African Americans as USCitizens.

Republicans proposed the 14th amendment which became
Part of the Constitution in 1868:
All persons born or naturalized in the US, and subject to
the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the US and of that
state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce
any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities
of citizens of the US; nor shall any state deprive any person
of life, liberty, or property, without the due process of law;Nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal

First African Americans inCongress
In 1869 the first African Americans entered Congress asRepublicans establishing a trend that would not be brokenuntil 1935.
Hiram R. Revels (R)was the first US Senator in 1870.
Blanche K. Bruce (R) was the first Full term US Senator.
Edward Brooke (R) of MA was the first popularly elected USSenator in 1967. Also the first to be reelected.

In 1874 Political Cartoonist Thomas Nastdepicted the GOP as the Elephant and theDemocrats as the Donkey.
The political theme of the cartoon was thepotential decision by then President Ulysses S.Grant to seek a third term.
