How to round a number to the nearest 10
Look at the ones digit.
• if it is less than 5 then round the number down by changing the ones digit to zero;
• if it is 5 or more then round the number up by adding one on to the tens digit and changing the ones digit to zero.
Examples
• 37 rounds up to 40 because the ones digit is 7. • 63 rounds down to 60 because the ones digit is 3.
• 145 rounds up to 150 because the ones digit is a 5.
Life-skills

Insects
Helpful and Harmful insects:
Harmful insects
Certain insects can be dangerous to animals and plants. The
following are a handful of insects that can threaten
gardens:
Carpenter ants: These ants will burrow into wood, causing
damage. They may compromise any wooden structure in and
around a home.
Locusts: Various species of locust can damage plants and
crops due to their appetites.
Treehoppers: These small, green insects mimic the look of
leaves, and their appetites can destroy crops and gardens.
Red pavement ant: As they feed on all manner of human
food, these ants can quickly overtake areas in staggering
numbers and deliver painful bites.
Grasshoppers: Certain grasshoppers, like the red-legged
grasshopper, can destroy food crops and transfer parasites
to birds when eaten as prey.
Caterpillars: Many caterpillars, the precursor to adult
moths, will feed constantly on leaves, stems and other parts
of plants. The tobacco hornworm moth caterpillar can
damage potato and tomato plants.
Helpful insects.
Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they search
for food and many insects are quite helpful to have around.
While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests.
Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant
populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to
humans, either.
Big dipper firefly: These colourful insects feast on
earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage.
Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling
lights.
Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous,
many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help
control pest populations that can damage plants and crops.
Dragonflies: These aerial artists zip around the yard,
consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester
plants and humans.
Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of
Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations.
Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the
best pollinators out there.
Put the names of the insects from the picture above into
the correct table:

Eating a range of healthy foods
It is important that we eat a wide variety of healthy foods, such as
vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products. This means that we are
getting all the important vitamins and nutrients that our body needs
to complete everyday activities. These foods help our bodies to grow
and repair as well as helping our sight, breathing, heart function and
blood flow.
FOOD GROUPS Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are our main source of energy. They provide us with
the fuel that our bodies need to survive. Carbohydrates are very
important. If we don’t have enough carbohydrates in our diet, we
become tired and easily upset. Main sources of carbohydrates
include bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.
Protein
Protein is used to help our muscles and organs to repair and grow.
Protein is especially important for children who are still growing. It
is also important when we exercise because it helps to build our
muscles to repair and strengthen. Main sources of protein include
meat, fish, eggs and green vegetables.
Fats
Fats are another type of energy that our body needs. This is a
secondary source of fuel and therefore our bodies don’t need as
much of it. Some fats are better for our body than others. These
are called healthy fats and they include avocado, nuts and certain
oils. Fats are important in small amounts because they help our body
to absorb essential vitamins and minerals.
