Grade Level: Kindergarten

Overview:

LIMBS International is a nonprofit organization which provides prosthetics to amputees in underdeveloped countries. To achieve this goal the organization partners with existing clinics around the world. In this activity students will gather data about weather conditions and use it to draw conclusions about the patterns in the natural world.

In this lesson, students will:

Watch the LIMBS International video

Discuss how important the ability to walk is

Use a number chart to track different patterns

Observe how seasons impact temperature

Compare and contrast weather conditions around the world

Students learn that:

Not everyone has the ability to walk, but LIMBS is helping them walk again

Number charts can be used to determine general patterns in weather

Seasons are determined by the time of year

Seasons are determined by the relationship to the equator

Students will be able to:

Understand that not everyone is the same and empathize with others

Identify patterns

Determine when seasons will occur based on their location

Predict weather patterns in various places around the word

STEM Content Tie-In: Students will collect data, analyze patterns, and draw valid conclusions.

Levels of Thinking:

Analysis

Seeing patterns

Organization of parts

Recognition of hidden meanings

Identification of components

Practice:

The following practice allows students to apply scientific facts related to the Earth as shown below where the student

would apply the knowledge that cycles of the moon happen monthly and that the average month is 30 days long.

A student observed the apparent shape of the moon every night for a period of 60 days. On Day 10 the student

observed a full moon. On which other day did the student most likely observe a full moon?

Day 20

Day 30

Day 40

Day 50

This activity provides the opportunity for student to apply a similar level of thinking to gather weather data and look

for patterns such as differences in temperature due to location relative to the equator or the difference in seasons

relative to the equator.

Day 1: Introduction

After showing the LIMBS video, ask:

What does LIMBS do?

Why it is important to be able to walk?

In which countries does LIMBS have partner clinics?

Have you ever heard of Kenya?

Show students where Kenya is on the map provided or on a classroom map.

Explain that Kenya is part of the continent of Africa.

What do you already know about Kenya?

Have you, or someone you know, ever visited Kenya?

What do you think the weather in like in Kenya?

Do you think it is hotter or colder than where our school is?

Student Activity:

1. Have students complete the Perfecting Patterns 100’s chart by completing the missing values.

2. Use the chart, pencils, and weather thermometer to explore temperatures around the school including:

Inside the classroom

In front of a space heater (if possible)

Outside

In the hallway

A refrigerator in the cafeteria or teachers’ lounge

Materials:

Perfecting Patterns 100’s Chart

Large room thermometer

LIMBS Clinic World Map

If possible, space heater

3. For each location:

Find the number on the temperature chart

Discuss whether the temperature feels hot, cold, or mild

Circle the symbol for the type of temperature under the number

4. Homework:

Students should take the chart home and discuss with parents/guardians which temperatures are cold, hot, or mild.

Have students check the day’s weather by watching the weather report or using the Internet.

Days 2-7: Temperatures around the world

1. Compare the students’ homework results and discuss how different people could have different ideas about whether

a particular temperature is cold, hot, or mild.

2. Using the LIMBS Clinic World Map, discuss that LIMBS partners with clinics around the world.

Ask:

Why does LIMBS need to be in so many places?

What other countries are the clinics in?

What do you think the temperatures will be at the different clinics?

What colors can be used to indicate hot, mild, and cold?

3. Track the temperature at the LIMBS clinics for 5 days.

Student Activity:

1. Have students take our their Perfecting Patterns Chart and:

Color the hot temperatures on the chart in red

Color the cold temperatures on the chart in blue

Color the mild temperatures on the chart in yellow

2. Distribute map of LIMBS clinic locations.

3. Using the Internet find the preceding day’s noon temperature for each location.

4. Record the temperatures on the LIMBS clinic chart.

5. Repeat this procedure for five days.

Day 8: Going deeper

1. Divide the students into pairs or groups and have them identify patterns in the temperature. Have them look for:

Where is the hottest

Where is the coldest

Is there a pattern

2. Introduce the weather concepts of:

Seasons

Equator

Hemispheres

Student Activity:

1. In their groups, have the students:

Lightly shade across the area with the hottest temperatures in red

Lightly shade across the area with the coldest temperatures in blue

2. Applying Understanding:

If it is winter at the home of LIMBS in El Paso, Texas would it be summer at every LIMBS clinic?

How can you tell?

What do you think the line on the map means?

Use the Internet to search the following question: What is the line which separates the top and bottom of the

world called?

Label the Equator on the map.

Can you see a pattern between the Equator and the temperatures on the map?

Search on the Internet to find each location’s current season.

Circle the season on the map under the information for the location.

Look at the map and the seasons, can you see a pattern?

Are the seasons related to the temperatures?

Are the seasons related to the Equator on the map?

What can we say about seasons and the equator on the map?

If you were a scientist traveling from Texas to one of these LIMBS clinics, how would this information help you?
