Graduation 2018 By: Hannah Summers
Everyone is encouraged to attend the JCHS Graduation Ceremony!
Come out and support our seniors as they start their journey into
adulthood. It will be held on May 18, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the
Johnston City Sports Complex. This year, the graduating class has
sixty-five students. The Valedictorians are Brittney Gibbens, Gage
McPhail, Ethan Murrah, Sara Roman, and Barrilynn Shelby. The
Salutatorian is Jackson Fowler. Come and support your 2018
graduating class as they embark on the journey of the rest of their
lives.
On Tuesday, May 1st, Johnston City High School offered an
opportunity to save lives. The Mike Dean Memorial Blood Drive
honors JCHS alumni Mike Dean, who passed away in a fatal car
crash in 2006. Since then, Dean’s family and friends have
coordinated with the American Red Cross to host blood drives in
his honor. Dean was a blood donor during his time at JCHS, so it is
only fitting that these blood drives carry on his legacy.

Brown Bats, White Noses By: Hannah Cutsinger
As spring and summer roll around, many animals emerge from hibernation. One of the less
heard of little creatures emerging is the North American Little Brown Bat. The Little Brown
Bat is vital, as they eat many of the insects that plague humans over the summer, such as
mosquitoes and gnats. They are, however, plagued by a disease called White-Nose Syndrome
that is caused by a fungus which infects the skin of the muzzle, ears, and wings of hibernating
bats. This disease kills millions of bats each year and scientists have still found no cure. To
help these little bats you can give them places to roost that are safe from predators and
hopefully away from the white nose fungus. To give them these safe places, one can look up
plans and build a bat house or purchase an already made one at places like Rural King and
attach it to a building or post about fifteen feet above the ground. Also, to draw in the bats,
plant fragrant flowers and provide a water source near the bat house and they should fly in.
Let’s all help save this very important animal!

Page 4 Stress-Free Exam Taking By: Valerie Lindner
Exams have been known as the hardest part of high school for several years. They
have a huge effect on a students’ overall grade and bring stress for fear of failing.
Any upperclassman would tell you to just breathe and make sure you study. There
will be three exams a day so it is better to start light studying a couple weeks
before, then a few days before your first exam, start quizzing yourself with
notecards, etc...After every test, study for the next one. Make sure to get plenty of sleep the
night before and eat healthy foods along with a nutritious breakfast the mornings you take
exams. It’s okay to be nervous, but if you stress too much you may not get the grade you are
hoping for. The best thing you can do for yourself is get enough sleep, eat healthy, and study
for every exam.
