Revised August 2012

Topic: Graphing

Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills

Grade 4

110.15 ELA&R

Reading/Comprehension of Informational

Text/Procedural Texts. (13)(B) explain factual

information presented graphically (e.g., charts, diagrams, graphs, illustrations).

111.16 Mathematics

Probability and statistics. 4.13B interpret bar graphs

Grade 5

110.16 ELA&R

Reading/Comprehension of Informational

Text/Procedural Texts. (13)(B) interpret factual

or quantitative information presented in maps, charts, illustrations, graphs, timelines,

tables, and diagrams.

111.16 Mathematics Probability and Statistics: 5.13 (A) use tables of related number pairs to

make line graphs; (B) describe characteristics of data presented in tables and graphs including median, mode, and range; and (C)

graph a given set of data using an appropriate graphical representation such as a picture or line graph.

Grade 5

112.16 Science

Scientific investigations and reasoning:

construct appropriate simple graphs, tables,

maps, and charts using technology, including computers, to organize, examine, and

evaluate information. (2G)

Grade 6

ELA&R Reading/Comprehension of Informational

Text/Procedural Texts. interpret factual, quantitative, or technical information presented in maps, charts, illustrations, graphs, timelines, tables, and diagrams (12B)

111.22 Mathematics Probability and statistics: (A)select and use an

appropriate representation for presenting and displaying different graphical representations of the same data including line plot, line graph, bar graph, and stem and leaf plot; (C) sketch circle graphs to display data (10A&C)

Grade 6

112.18 Science

Scientific investigation and reasoning:

construct tables and graphs, using repeated

trials and means, to organize data and identify patterns (2D)

Force, motion, and energy. Measure and

graph changes in motion (8D)

Grade 6

113.18 Social Studies

(3) Geography: (C) compare various world

regions and countries using data from

geographic tools, including maps, graphs, charts, databases, and models; and

(D) create thematic maps, graphs, charts,

models, and databases depicting aspects such as population, disease, and economic

activities of various world regions and

countries.

Grade 6

113.18 Social Studies

(21) Social Studies Skills. (C) organize and

interpret information from outlines, reports,

databases, and visuals, including graphs, charts, timelines, and maps (F) use

appropriate mathematical skills to interpret

social studies information such as maps and graphs

Data Analysis & Probability (6-8)

Teachers can allow students to use this tool to summarize data using the various types of graphs. Allow students to use the vm(virtual manipulative) to check their homework and explore new data

This site is a little more advanced, I would first allow students to explore it in small groups or with direct instruction

Live Links

http://article19.com/shockwave/monte.htm

In this virtual game students conduct

probability experiments by setting certain

parameters of the simulation (such as the

number of dice to roll, the number of rolls

per round, etc. ), and then analyzing a

display of the frequencies of the various

dice totals

Mean, Median, Box & Whisker

This vm is simple to use and includes instructions for use.

I like this vm better than the previous link

because its more kid-friendly (app. for 4-6)

The only downside to this vm is the user can

only plot numbers 0-100.

http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=204

This vm can be used to analyze data with bar

graphs, line graphs, pie charts, and pictographs. You can enter multiple rows and

columns of data, select which set(s) to

display in a graph, and choose the type of representation.

More appropriate for all ages- format isn't too

complicated and isn't too childish.

Lesson Plans

In this activity, students examine the United States

Census Bureau Web site to investigate projections

of the total population of states from 1995-2025.

Using the provided data, students will analyze

statistics from five states of their choice, develop

specific research questions using the data, and

create three graphs to compare and contrast

the information.

students collect and display data in a variety of ways, beginning with tallies and

pictographs. Later lessons focus on

representing data using bar graphs, line plots, circle graphs, box-and-whisker plots, and

glyphs. The students also compare graphs

from two sets of data and find the range, median, mean, and mode of each set.

In this unit, students participate in activities in which they analyze information

represented graphically. Students are

asked to discuss, describe, read, and write

about the graphs and the information they

contain.

This lesson includes a take-home activity that

requires them to graph and interpret data all while creating eco-friendly habits at home

and school. Link includes video to open

activity.

Literature

Literature

I began to add books from this great site I found but they all seemed so awesome, so, I just decided to include the link!

http://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/teaching-graphs.html

The site includes info about each book: reading/difficulty/DRA level, info about book, what the site likes about it, and a link to buy it on Amazon! It doesn’t seem like this book is endorsed by any publishers, so, their choices are bias-free.
