The Three Greek Orders

• The Greeks adopted the post and lintel design from the Egyptians. Soon they began to modify it into their own designs.

• The Greek orders are categorized by their stylized columns: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

1. Doric: Heavy Simplicity

2. Ionic: A gentler design?

Temple Athena Nike

3. Corinthian: leafy but not popular

What makes a building Beautiful?

“A temple design must be symmetrical. Without proportion and symmetry there can be no goodness in the design. A symmetrical design is one that can be divided in half by a line so that each half is the same as the other.”— On Architecture,Vitruvius, 27 BC

What is entasis (stretching)?

“The level of the stylobate (the base from which the temple rises) must be increased in the center by means of the builders’ tools known as “unequal levelers”. If it is laid perfectly level, then to the eye it will appear slightly hollow.”— On Architecture,Vitruvius, 27 BC
