Dear Association Greenlandic Children,
I am writing this letter because I would like to take part in the Work Camp that you are organising for this summer 2014, after seeing the message posted on Twitter through Xchange Scotland. I received further information about the project via email and thought: “I would like to be that lucky volunteer!” I enclose my portfolio and list of equipment for your consideration.
I’m currently a Digital Journalist and Social Media Youth Volunteer at the Volunteer Centre Edinburgh (VCE) where for the past 8 months I have been making and editing films, and taking photos of events and young people there.
Why do I want to take part in this project? For many reasons; firstly, I would learn a lot from the people, the experience and the responsibility involved. I’ve never been to Greenland, in a helicopter or to a military base, so it would be an adventure, and at the same time it would be a great opportunity for me to be able to photograph and film in this unique setting. It’s volunteering, but I also know I would feel rewarded with the experience, because that’s how I feel when I volunteer at the VCE.
Secondly, the project is centered on the children and that makes this even more appealing to me. I have enjoyed working with groups of young people and learning from them in my current role at the VCE. I think it will be fun and enjoyable, because I have the enthusiasm of a child; I feel surprised by new things and try to make the most of everything.

I have many ideas for possible workshops with the Greenlandic children of the project, such as filming them performing their favourite songs; taking photographs and designing a comic book with their pictures; it could also be a good idea to teach groups of children how to build their own camera obscura, depending on their ages. Finally I was thinking of mixing all of this together and making a video for them, with their photos and songs, or a small magazine like the one I’ve shown to you in my portfolio.
Now, the moment of truth, a difficult question: Why should I be the lucky volunteer to engage in this adventure? Well, first of all, I have the enthusiasm to do it. I’m a hard working person, reliable and responsible, with experience of making and editing videos and photography. Most of all, I put my soul in everything I do, in every job or volunteering role I have ever had.
So now you know a little more about me and the reasons why I’m applying for this opportunity. Before I finish, I would like to thank you for taking your time in reading my letter.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Mariola García
