Fall begins this month. Ever thought about that word fall? I looked it

up. In regards to the other way it is used besides the obvious of losing

one’s balance and falling down there is the season that we call fall.

The word fall is actually from the Middle English “fallen” and that from

the Old English “feallan”. The Old English means fail, decay or die. So

if you fail to walk to the refrigerator you may have fallen.

On the other hand fall may be a time of the season when things die

and decay. It being the opposite of spring when things come alive and

grow.

You can use fall to show that someone or something passes into

another state. For example if someone falls in love they are in love.

Here is an online explanation of the word. “In the early 1600s as more

people started moving into cities, the word harvest fell out of use. Instead, city dwellers began to use the phrase “fall of the leaf” to refer to the third season of the year when trees lose their leaves”.

So all of that makes one a bit leery of the season. Who after all likes to

fall? And the idea of things dying and decaying is a downer. But you

know the Bible speaks to us of seasons, right?

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the

heaven: 2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to

pluck up that which is planted;” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2)

It might be understood that God has a purpose for every season. Fall has

its purpose and even its delights. Some things die but some things come

to life. No more picking pickles in the garden but footballs begin to fly.

No more green lawns but no more lawns to mow. No more family

vacations for a while but lots of time to plan for the next one. Less

excuses to miss church and more chances to come and worship Jesus.

Find the good, even in the “fall”. It is a trick to a life filled with joy. PK
