Retired TeachersSystem Trustee gave areport of the finances ofthe state-wide system.Les Upton, State

ARTA president, toldthe members to get thenew retirees started inthe association as soonas possible. Also, hesaid “If you know ofanyone who is havingtrouble with the annu-ity or anything elsethat the State Staffcould help them with,to have her or him callthe office. Someone willbe able to help.” Hereminded the membersof the StateConvention, September13th.

Mary Alice and MattHughes gave an updateon insurance andMedicare status.Ella Rolfe, Little

Rock, a director,presided for giving thedoor prizes. She alsothanked the SalineCounty Unit for han-dling the registration.Sharon Johnson,

Activities Director,gave the list of cruisesand tours planned forthe year. She statedthat the Hawaii cruiseand the trip to and inAlaska are filled up.The meeting

adjourned with a tourof the building to seethe living units, thepublic areas of thebuilding and the areaaround the building.Those attending from

Local members of boththe Hickory House andthe Equine Adventurers4-H clubs volunteeredtheir time Friday, May4 to help support one ofthe many events heldby the Horse TalesLiteracy Project (for-merly the BlackStallion LiteracyFoundation). The HorseTales Literacy Project isa nonprofit organizationthat helps motivatechildren to enjoy read-ing, specifically WalterFarley's horse centeredbooks. The event was held for

first grade school stu-dents and took place atthe Camp RobinsonTrail Area. It was ashaded environmentwith variouscorrals/stations set upto teach children topicslike "grooming", "horsenutrition", "tack", etc.There was also a "read-ing barn" with a volun-teer and a book at eachhorse stall. Each child

was either read to orencouraged to read thebook to the horse.There was also a "gamestation" where the chil-dren could work offenergy. Games wereled by several of our 4-H youth from PrairieCounty. Our 4-Herswere able to share theirknowledge and love ofhorses to help aremarkable cause. Theyshowed excellent lead-ership skills and disci-pline. They functionedindependently, man-aged groups of childrensuccessfully, facilitatedorderly transitionsbetween stations, andall the while, madeeach child feel specialand listened to. Wereceived multiple posi-tive feedback commentsfrom several of theorganization leadersabout how well our 4-Hmembers behaved andassisted everyone. Weare excited to have beena part of this program

and can't wait to helpout again! We would also like to

encourage anyone inthe community whowould like to join one ofour 4-H clubs to do so.The Hickory HouseClub meets the firstMonday of the month at6:30 PM at the HickoryPlains MethodistChurch and the EquineAdventurers Club,which is a horse club,meets monthly asscheduled either at thefairgrounds in Hazen orat members’ homes.Come join the fun!
