• Yuppies – Young urban professionals who bought luxury cars, designer clothes, and other expensive items

• The Eighties saw an increase of drug abuse• Cocaine and crack cocaine abuse became more popular especially in urban areas• First Lady Nancy Reagan launched “Just Say No” campaign• 1980 – Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) formed

• 1981 – Researchers identified a new disease that was causing seemingly healthy young men to

die• Called “auto immune

deficiency disease” AIDS

• Weakened the immune

system, making people

more susceptible to

illnesses like pneumonia

• First noticed among

homosexual men

but quickly spread

to heterosexual

men and women

• Spread through

unprotected sex,

blood transfusions,

and sharing needles

while abusing drugs

• Reagan administration didn’t

do much to deal with the

crisis• 1985 - Rock Hudson became

the first major celebrity to

reveal he had AIDS

• Finally in 1987 Reagan addressed the crisis in a

speech• By that point, 36,058

Americans had contracted the

disease and 20,849 had died

from it

• December 8, 1980 – Mark David Chapman approached John Lennon outside of his apartment and asked for an autograph.

• Lennon spent the next few hours at a recording studio.

• As he returned to his apartment building, Chapman shot him four times

• Lennon was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
