[‘The gum leaf’. Cover contains original envelope
inscribed by William Voules Brown (1809): ‘A leaf of the
Gum Tree at Glenelg, under which the Colony of South
Australia was proclaimed on the 28th December 1836 by
Governor Hindmarsh’. This leaf was picked by William
Voules Brown (1809) soon after he arrived at Holdfast
Bay in 1837. It was one of his most treasured
possessions and he kept it in a secret compartment of
his portable writing desk. See also explanatory letter
written by John Alexander Voules Brown (1879) in Series
13c/5.]

have been brought to South Australia by William Voules

have been torn out may have comprised his diary of the
voyage. He later re-used the volume to record
headstone accounts for his cemetery.

Papers relating to Captain Philip Hughes Jones and his wife
Harriet nee Brown, and to the ship City of York, which
was wrecked 12 July 1899 off Rottnest Island, Western
Australia.

[Captain Philip Hughes Jones was amongst the
casualties of the wreck of the sailing ship City of York.
These papers were collected by Christopher Wall, a
great-grandson of Captain and Mrs Jones. Comprises
copies of press cuttings, letters, photographs and
research notes. A series of letters written by Captain
Jones and his wife in 1894 and 1895 describe a voyage
of the City of York and the birth at sea of their first child
Dorothy Emma Seaborn Jones. Also includes letters
written by Captian Jones to his wife during his last ill
fated voyage in 1899. The original letters are held by
Mrs Phyllis Harriet Wilkie (daughter of Captain and Mrs
Harriet Jones), whose address in 1988 is 8/11 Frazer
Street, Collaroy N.S.W. 2097.]

family tree, showing what he could remember of the
Brown family, also information about the English

is the only known written document which mentions that
the Voules family came from Bristol. See also series
