TERM 4 WEEK 3
Intensive Swimming Years 2 & 3
From the Office
Farewell Mr Smith
It was with great
sadness that we said farewell to Mr Smith
at the end of week 2. Jonathan brought
with him a wealth of knowledge and
skills that have been a true asset to
Gunnedah South since he arrived half
way through term 2. In his time here, he
quickly gained rapport with students and
was able to meet many of our South
school families.
We wish Mr Smith all the best as he
resumes his position at Mungindi Central
School and hope that he can one day
return to visit us at Gunnedah South.
Titanium Lunch
It was my pleasure to take Owen Shoesmith and Finn Leader to lunch on Thursday for their Titanium lunch. Very mature, well mannered young men, who offered great conversation and weren't shy to give me some ideas on how to improve the school. Not surprisingly, their ideas mostly centred on a word starting with s...followed by p...or...t! Congratulations boys, I was very proud of you.
Premiers Spelling Bee State Finals
Good luck to South’s super spellers,
Lewis Donaldson and Charlie
Bridge who are off to Sydney this
week to compete in the finals of the
Premier’s Spelling Bee. We will be
thinking of them on Wednesday when
they take the stage at the ABC studios
in Ultimo. Good luck boys!
Sports Photos
Sports photos will be held on Monday
6th November. A note regarding this
went home on Friday.
Getting used to North West Colours
Isabelle Moore is getting used to
wearing blue after competing in the
North West girls cricket team last
week. Isabelle has also represented
the North West in Soccer and Tennis
this year. A great achievement for an
amazing sportsperson!
Isabelle was named captain of the
side last week, playing in Maitland.
From the Office
Changed traffic Signs
Please note when parking in Winder pl, that we now have disabled parking right outside the front gate. There has also been a loading zone added from 9am-2pm from the front of the school for approx. 7m heading North. Please ensure
that you are looking out for the signs.
Writing with a difference
Ed Waerea from 1M came to the office to show me his writing last week. It was done on an ipad and when I asked him to read it, it was simple; just touch the screen and I could hear him read, as he had already made a recording of himself reading it.
Excursions
Yr 2 and Yr 6 both enjoyed fabulous weather for their excursions during week 3. Yr 6 travelled to Sydney for a full week and Yr 2 to the Warrumbungle education centre.
What a glorious day to be sitting on a mountain!
A full week in Sydney is very tiring for
the students, and also for the adults
who attend. Firstly, organising the
excursion and then leaving family and
being on duty 24hrs a day for 5 days is
exhausting! We thank Ms Davies, Miss
Flannery, Mrs Craig, Mr Silver and Mr
Robertson for giving the students this
unique and memorable experience.
CAPERS
What a huge week our CAPERS
performers and their teachers have
had this week! Mrs Merlehan and Mrs
Passfield took a group of approx. 25
students to Tamworth on Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday to practice for the
production. Not arriving home until
close to midnight on Friday night and
then backing up for Saturday night’s
performance.
CAPERS is a musical production held
at TREC which includes around 2500
students from public schools in our
region. The event is held biannually
and showcases the amazing talent in
our Primary and High schools.
This is the first time South has been a
part of the event and we cannot thank
the two teachers enough for their
commitment and effort in making this
experience possible for our students.
The photo below illustrates just how big
a production this is with the entire floor
of TREC covered by performers.
Rumour has it that Mrs Passfield even
ended up on the big screen!
Thank you Mrs Merlehan and Mrs
Passfield for providing an experience
that our students will never forget.

North West Representatives at State Athletics Last week, 8 athletes travelled to Sydney to represent our school, Zone and the North West Area at the N.S.W. P.S.S.A. Athletics Championships, held at Sydney
Olympic Park.
Junior Boys Relay: Chad Fisher, Mason Louis, Harry Ryman, Jake Atkins; The 3rd ranked North West Junior Boys Relay team really hit the ground running, going under a minute for the first time ever and beating the other two higher qualified North West teams. Harry Ryman: Made a Semi Final with a new P.B. in the 100m sprint and finished the carnival ranked 17th in the State. Chad Fisher: Finished the 800m in 4th position in his heat and came in 20th overall, and created a new P.B. as well. Owen Shoesmith: Ran the 200m and competed in the Long Jump, but it was the High Jump where he made a new P.B. of 1.25m. Jacob Price: Competed in the Senior Boys High Jump and finished on a credible 1.45m. Ellie Thomas: Also a high jumper, just missed out on jumping a P.B. at 1.25m but came away ranked in the top 30 of the State. Bella Sawyer: Finished the Long Jump competition ranked 15th with a P.B. of 3.82m. Also competed in the High Jump and did another P.B. of 1.25m and was ranked 15th.
Congratulations to these Athletes. It is a wonderful achievement to qualify for the Championships and produce such great performances. A big thank you
goes to the parents and families who make these representative opportunities possible.
This year some of our infants classes participated in the 2017
NAIDOC Week Colouring In Competition.
The aim of this initiative was to provide our students with a
greater understanding of the important of friendship and
diversity.
20 students were selected throughout NSW to received a
NAIDOC Medal of Excellence for their entry.
Congratulations to Cooper Mitchell from 1S who received this
award.
