THE PrOBLEm,Animportantfeatureofdialysiscathetersisthesuctionopeningstowithdrawblood.Keepingthesuctionopeningsclearofthrombolyticmaterialandawayfromthevesselwallisclearlyessentialtodialysisfunctionsinceanadequatesupplyofbloodmustberemovedfromthepatienttobedialyzed.However,aproblemwithdialysiscathetersisthatduringbloodwithdrawal,assuctionisbeingappliedthroughthecatheteropeningsandlumen,thesuctioncancausethecathetertobeforcedagainstthevesselwall,knownas“sideportocclusion”,whichcanblocktheopeningandadverselyaffectsthefunc-tionofthecatheter.Infact,theopeningcanbecomecompletelyblocked,therebypreventingnecessaryintakeofblood,i.e.arterialflow
