HAPTIC TECHNOLOGY

Meeta BhanushaliDivya Rao

HAPTICS ???‘HAPTICS’ is derived from Greek word ‘haptikos’ which means “being able to come into contact”

Haptic = touch

Haptics is the science of applying touch sensation & control to interact with computer application

Types of Haptics:Phantom Interface

Cyber Grasp System

Phantom:o Provides 3D touch to virtual

objects.o Six degree-of-freedom

positional sensing.o User can really feel the

shape and size of the virtually 3D object that has been already programmed.

o Virtual 3D space in which the phantom operates is called haptic scene.

Cyber Grasp:The Cyber Grasp system fits over user’s hand like an exoskeleton.Provides 6 degrees of freedom.Measure finger angularFlexion.

Maglev Haptico Consist of two bowl shape

objects,powered by electromagnets.

o A joystick floats around with a tracking sensor that relays its position back to a Linux Fedora-powered computer.

o Users could interact with 3D shapes using the joysticks.

o Can feel the volume & weight of objects.

Building Blocks Of Haptic system

Applications Computers & video games:

Haptic feedback is commonly used in arcade games , especially racing video games.

Mobile devices : Tactile haptic feedback is becoming common in cellular devices.

Medical Treatment: used For training in minimally invasive procedures as well As for remote surgery.

Robotics: Widely used in telerobotics & teleopeartion.

Arts & Design: Used in virtual arts such as sound synthesis, graphic design and animations.

Limitations

High cost involved. Large weight and size of the haptic

device. Haptic device can only exert force

with limited magnitute and not equally in all direction.

The precision of touch require lot of advance design.

Advantages Working time is reduced. Increase confidence in medical

field. Communication is centered

through the touch and the digital world can behave like the real world.

Conclusion Touch plays a huge role in the way we

perceive our surrounding and also how we interact with them.

Currently it is limited to consumers. Increasing applications of haptics the

cost of the haptic devices will drop in future.

This technology brings us one step closer to virtual world.
