Conversion,theprocessbywhichnon-JewsbecomeJews,hasalwaysoccupiedanimportantplaceontheJewishagenda.Fromatheoreticalstandpoint,conversionisafascinatingphenomenoninmanyrespects:religiousandnational,historicalandsocial,philosophicalandpsychological.Fromapracticalstandpoint,conversionisanimportantsocialinstitutionthatisvitalforJewishcontinuity.Jewishattitudestowardconversionhaveevolvedoverthegenerations,reflectingthechangingcircumstancesandneedsoftheJewishcollective.2

Fromancienttimestothepresent,conversiontoJudaismhasbeenviewedasanacceptablemeansofjoiningtheJewishpeople.DuringtheHellenisticperiod,Jewsactivelysoughtconverts.SubsequentlywiththeriseofChristianity,suchmissionaryoutreachceased.Yet,throughthecenturiesithasremainedpossiblefornon-JewstoenterintotheJewishfold.Inmoderntimes,thedifferentbranchesofJudaismdevelopedavarietyofproceduresforconversion.Paradoxically,however,MessianicJudaismhasnotformulatedaprocessofconversion,andsuchreluctancehascontributedtoitsisolationfromtheJewishcommunityasawhole.3
