CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The AGM was well received by those that attended. It is a great pity that more
of our members do not attend this meeting because it is your chance to make
your voices heard on how the charity is being run and to address any queries
you may have. You may have been care worn by all the talk of the referendum
vote but it is just as important for you to vote for your committee. John Hart
and Adrian Cole have stood down from the committee for personal reasons but
we shall still see them at meetings. My thanks go to them for their assistance
over the last year and to the other members of the committee who remain in
place.
Many of our readers visit G Clinic and on your next visit you will be able to see
artwork produced by some of the members of our Wednesday morning Art
Group. Their work is on permanent loan and the framing and mounts were
funded by Heartbeat. We hope you will appreciate the improvement on the bare
walls. A heartfelt thanks to those members who contributed their work.
Some of you will personally know Grace Bullock, a very loyal member who has
recently passed away in her 90th year. Grace was one of our hospital visitors
who went every Monday onto the heart wards not only to visit but to do any
shopping they required. A very special lady, Grace was loved by everyone who
knew her and she will be sadly missed by us all. Our condolences to her family.
TONY
DON’T FORGET TO USE OUR CO-OP CHARITY NUMBER 1946
To use this number you need to use your own dividend card first and then ask the
assistant to transfer the dividend to the Heartbeat Number 1946
IT’s STRANGE THE THINGS YOU NOTICE
Most of the time when you’re crying nobody notices your tears. Most of the
time when you’re worried, nobody feels your pain. Most of the time when
you’re happy, nobody sees your smile. But when to have flatulence just one
time……….!

TREASURERS REPORT
We are now in August and only one Bank Holiday before Christmas. At the time of
writing you could be thinking that summer has passed us by altogether, however, the
warmth that we have missed from our weather has been supplemented by the support
and friendship between our members in our many different activities.
Two ways that you can help support other members are by volunteering to drive
patients to hospital for appointments when no family or friends are available, see
page 8 for details or contact Ross Taylor on (01728)860412; you never know it may
be you who needs help one day. Alternatively, you may like to join the merry band
who help with our store collections. There are only a few each year and you could do
as little a one hour. Contact Diane/Peter Marriott on (01394) 286037.
In conclusion, I would like to remind you all that joining the One Hundred Plus Club
is a fun way to support our fund raising. By paying just £12 per year you have three
chances each month to win. Winners for each quarter are shown in the Pulse.

TITTER YE NOT
Why do you eat ice cream, cake and sweets when you’re stressed? Because
stressed spelled backwards is desserts.
Life is not a fairy tale. If you lose your shoes at midnight - you’re drunk!
Marriage is a workshop...husband works and wife shops!
All my life I thought air was free; until I bought a bag of crisps!

JUST THINK ON
A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A
successful woman is one who can find such a man.
Some people are like a ‘slinky’ pretty much useless but they make you smile when
you push them down the stairs.
People say you can’t live without love but I think oxygen is more important.
The road to success is always under construction.
Love you enemies, it makes them so damned mad.
Everyone wants to go to heaven; but nobody wants to die.

GEORGE CARLIN’S VIEWS ON AGAIN AND HOW TO STAY YOUNG
Do you realize that the only time in our lives when
we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less
that 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging than
you think in fractions. “How old are you?” “I’m
four and a half!” You’re never thirty six and a half.
You’re four and a half, going on five! That’s the
key.
You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you
back. You jump to the next number, or even a
few ahead. “How old are you?2 !I’m gonna be
16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be
16!
And then the greatest day of you life… You
become 21. Even the words sound like a
ceremony. You become 21. Yesss!!!
But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there?
Makes you sound like bad milk! He turned; we had to
throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re just a sour-
dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed?
You become 21, you turn 30, then you’re pushing 40.
Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before
you know it, you reach 50 and your dreams are gone.
PAGE 9
But wait!!! You make it to 60. You didn’t think
you would! So you become 21, turn 30, push
40, reach 50 and make it to 60. You’ve built
up so much speed that you hit 70! After that
it’s a day-by-day thing; you hit Wednesday!
You get into your 80’s and every day is a complete cycle; you hit lunch; you
turn 4:30; you reach bedtime. And it doesn’t
end there. Into the 90’s, you start going
backwards; “I was just 92.”
Then a strange thing happens. If you make it
over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m
100 and a half!”
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

STAY ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Maria has a racing driver boyfriend but she is a little puzzled so she says to her
Father, “Dad there is something my boyfriend said to me that I didn’t under-
stand” He said “I have a beautiful chassis, lovely air bags and a fantastic
bumper.”
Dad replied, “You tell your boyfriend that if he opens your bonnet and tries to
check your oil with his dipstick; I will tighten his nuts so hard that his headlights
will pop out and he will start leaking out of his exhaust pipe.
PAGE 13
IT’s NO COINCIDENCE THAT I’M USING PAGE 13 FOR THIS PIECE
How many times have you said “Now there’s a coincidence!” A coincidence is
two events that happen at the same time or in close succession, or appear some-
how to be related but neither one has actually caused the other in any way.
I don’t know what the following signifies, if anything. Do you think that they
are just coincidences?
United States of America presidents Lincoln
(left) and Kennedy (right) were both concerned
with civil rights. Lincoln was elected in 1860,
Kennedy was elected in 1960. Both presidents
were shot on a Friday in the presence of their
wives.
Their presidential successors were both named Johnson. Andrew Johnson was
born in 1806 and Lyndon Johnson was born in 1906. Lincoln’s assassin was
born in 1839 and Kennedy’s in 1939. Both assassins were themselves
assassinated before going for trial.
Lincoln’s secretary, named Kennedy, advised him not to go to the theatre, and
Kennedy’s secretary, named Lincoln, advised him not to go to Dallas, Texas.
John Wilkes Booth (left) shot Lincoln in a theatre
and fled to a warehouse. Lee Harvey Oswald
(right) shot Kennedy from a warehouse and fled
to a theatre.
The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain
seven letters.
The names Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson each contain thirteen letters
The names John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald each contain fifteen
letters…. Now there is a coincidence! - or is it?

AMAZING GRACE
Back in May 2011, I wrote an article about Grace Bullock who
was born in Ayrshire in 1926 on a farm where her father was farm
manager. Leaving school at the age of 14 she joined the Royal
Observer Core and was trained to identify British and German
aircraft from the ground by their profile. Following her 3-year
stint she then joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, forerunner of
the WRAC where she worked on Tanks from 1943-49. Grace
married her husband whilst still in the army and following her demob lived in Chelmsford.
Grace has a son, Ian, and when he was fourteen she went to work at Marconi on BEA
Systems for the MOD where she stayed until her retirement in 1985. Grace became a
widow and in 1999 she joined Heartbeat . Two years later she became a hospital visitor on
the heart wards until she was overtaken by her own illness early this year. Grace lived in a
gated community on Foxhall Road where she was well known for her cheerful disposition
and willingness to help her neighbours.
Many of you reading this will well remember the wee Scots lassie who never lost her soft
Scottish burr. Until December last, she would visit heart patients if they had no other
visitors and would not be offended if they didn’t want to chat. If the patient needed
reassurance she could put them in touch with one of our members who had had the
procedure to put them at their ease. She would also advise them of what Heartbeat could
offer them after they had attended the hospital rehab unit.
Grace regularly came with Heartbeat on day-trips and holidays and she was always open
and friendly to all whom she met. It is with regret, dear readers, that I have to tell you that
on 1 July, in her 90th year Grace departed this life for a well-earned rest.
Grace was full of laughter, joy and song and I can well image her leading a heavenly choir
in a chorus of “Sing as we go” and instructing us to stridently sing “Wish me luck as you
wave me goodbye.”
On behalf of all the people whose lives you have touched, thank you Grace, you really were
amazing and an inspiration to us all. Good night and God Bless.
Thinking of Grace I am reminded of John Wesley’s Rule
Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can
Ed.

COULD YOU BE NEXT?
Heartbeat member Mr Tony Pike and his wife Sandra attend Heartbeat weekly
exercise meetings at Maidenhall Sports centre. As a matter of course Tony was
given a leaflet advising him to have AAA check. He read the leaflet but did not
think it applied to him. This year Peter Marriott, who together with his wife
Diane, supervises the exercise classes asked Tony had he done anything about
getting the test done to which Tony replied that he had not yet done so. Peter
explained the importance making an appointment which is non-invasive and
takes about 10 minutes.
As promised, Tony went along for the examination and he was found to be in
need of an operation to repair his Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). Tony
was operated on within a few weeks and is well on the road to recovery and
cannot thank Peter enough for his persistence.
It is called “the silent killer” because there is no pain and by the time you do feel
pain it will be the last thing you feel. So all you gentlemen out their who are
over 65 we urge you most strongly to contact the AAA Screening office in
Colchester on (01206) 746282/746283 or e-mail chu-ftr.5reversaaa@nhs.net to
arrange a test. The test can be done at your nearest local facility i.e. Doctors
practice, clinic, hospital etc. So make contact - it really could save your life.

UP THE THAMES - NO PADDLES REQUIRED
How civilised another great day cruising the Thames on board the mv “Princess Poca-
hontas” arranged by David and Doreen Robinson. Although the double-decked vessel
has seating 134 passengers there is plenty room as we have the vessel to ourselves.
Once again a cold buffet lunch was served including puddings, cheese and biscuits
with coffee to follow. The weather was kind to us only giving us a passing shower as
we ate lunch. A great day was had by all but for those of you unable to join us here
are a few of the sites you have missed.
The affectionately
named “duck” had
a place in history
long before tourism
got in on the act.
The DUKW was
the result of a col-
laboration between
General Motors
Corp. (GMC) who
provided the auto-
motive components and New York City designers Sparkman & Stephens who gave
the vehicle its sea-going capabilities. During WWII damaged docks and heavily
guarded coastlines were inaccessible for large vessels but we needed to be able to
take men and cargo from ships to the beaches and an amphibious vehicle was the an-
swer. The DUKW’s played a crucial role in the allied invasions in Sicily, the Pacific
and the D-Day landings. In fact more than 40% of all over-beach supplies in Nor-
mandy were transported by the Ducks during the first four months. Why you may ask
DUKW? The D = First year of production Code “D” is for 1942; U= Body style “U”
utilityu truck (amphibious); K= Front wheel drive and W= Two rear driving wheels
(tandem axle). Well love a duck - who would have known that?
The Woolwich Ferry is a
London Transport free
ferry running between
Woolwich and north
Woolwich carrying
pedistrians, cyclists,
cars, vans and lorries
linking the north and
south circular road across the Thames. State papers of 1308 record that William de
Wicton sold the ferry and his house to William atte Halle for £10. It was sold again in
1320 for 100 silver marks. It seems inflations was around then!

Queen Elizabeth I stood at the top of
these steps to greet Sir Walter Raleigh
on his return voyage bringing tobacco
and potatoes from the new world. He
fell out of favour with the queen for
marrying one of her ladies in waiting
without permission. Released from the
Tower of London he went back to sea-
faring and trade. On the death of the
queen n 1603 he lost her patronage.
James VI of Scotland became James I of
England and Raleigh was accused of
colluding with the Spanish against the
King. Raleigh spent 12 years in the
Tower of London again before his execution on 29th October 1618. His last request
was to ask the executioner to inspect the axe and on seeing it he said “This is a sharp
medicine, but it is a physician for all diseases”.
Mv “Havengore” was specially commissioned by the Port of London authority in
1954 as their flagship and principal survey vessel. Built by British craftsmen using
English Oak and Teak is was completely restored between 1997-2008. It has now
resumed it’s previous role to take part in ceremonial occasions and the hosting of
dignitaries. I proudest moment came in 1965 when it bore the body of Sir Winston
Churchill on his final journey along the Thames. More recently, on 3rd June 2012,
members of the royal family boarded the vessel to be part of the flotilla at the Queen
Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee
Celebrations.

The Prospect of Whitby is a traditional English Pub
standing on the banks of the Thames since 1520. At
that time it was used by smugglers, thieves and
pirates. It still retains the original flagstone floor
and old casks and ships masts are built into the
structure. The old pewter-topped bar is a rare find.
Over the years it has had some notable patrons;
Samuel Pepys, Charles Dickens, Judge Jeffries and
the artists Turner and Whisler. During the 1960’s it
was frequented by film stars Kirk Douglas, Paul
Newman, Glenn Ford, and Rod Steiger to name but
a few. Prince Rainier of Monaco and Princess
Margaret also visited the establishment. Nicholas
Lyndhurst comes out of its door in a scene from
Only Fools and Horses in the episode when Grandad went missing.
If you are looking for a more
up-market eatery you could try
“The Narrow” for some Posh
Nosh curtsey of
Gordon Ramsey.
Titled “Quantum Cloud” by Anthony Gormley. It
stands close to the Millennium Dome on a platform
overlooking the pier used by the Thames Clipper.
The “sculpture is part of a 3-mile sculpture trail that
takes you into places you would not ordinarily go to
and is the start of what is hoped will be a regeneration
programme. The general consensus was that it looks
like a man encased in a jumble of wire coat hangers.
The two, 10 person, gondolas shown are part of
Thames crossing between Royal Victoria Dock and
North Woolwich Peninsular (within the O2 arena car
park) it was partly sponsored (£36m) by Dubai-based
airline Emirates. It is the first urban cable car in the
UK and crosses the Thames at a beight up to 90m,
300ft higher than that of the 02 Arena.

DECK THE WALLS
Heart patients attending outpatient appointments will have something to look at
instead of bare walls thanks to the talents of the Heartbeat East Suffolk (HES)
art group. 20 original paintings produced by some of the art group have been
loaned to the hospital to brighten up the waiting area and G clinic rooms. HES
has paid for the mounts and framing of the artwork. It is hoped that the
paintings can be rotated every 6 months so that in time patients will be able to
see the full range of subjects.
On 8th July the official viewing of the paintings was attended by Doctors
Duncan McNab, Paul Venables and Philip Read together with cardiology nurse
specialist, Claire Pond. Heartbeat committee members Diane & Peter Marriott
organised the project and were thanked for their initiative. Heartbeat artists also
attended the viewing and were personally thanked for their contributions by the
hospital staff who declared their work would enhance the ambiance of the
waiting rooms and clinics and that they felt sure that waiting patients would
appreciate their work.
Members who are not due for check-ups at G clinic in the near future can view
the paintings on Friday afternoons after 3pm when the clinics are not being
used.
See back page for the artists involved.
