Laramie Treaty

The U.S. Government had promised the Indians that settlers would not enter their sacred land in the Black Hills of Montana, this was the Laramie Treaty.

Broken Promise

• The Laramie Treaty was broken because

of the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush.

• Gold miners flooded the Indian’s land

searching for gold.

Conflict Began

•The Sioux and Cheyenne Indians left the Reservation because they were angry about white settlers entering their sacred Black Hills in Little Bighorn Montana.

The Battle Began

• The U.S. Army sent the Calvary to force the Indians back to the Reservation, one group led by Lt. General George Custer.•Custer took his 700 men and attacked before the other groups could join in the battle.

Custer’s Surprise !!2,000 Indian Warriors were Expecting Him!!

Disaster for the Calvary!!

Custer split his troops into 3 groups and the Indians surrounded Custer and his group. The two other groups escaped.

As the Indians closed in, Custer ordered his men to shoot their horses and stack the bodies to form a wall, but this provided little protection against bullets.

In less than an hour, Custer and his men were killed in the worst American military disaster ever.
