Sumi e

The Japanese word Sumi e translates to “ink picture”.

Born from a style of Chinese painting which in turn

inspired calligraphy, it was adopted by Zen Buddhist

and incorporated in their teachings. The absence of

color was thought to be more challenging and required

more discipline in order to capture the essence of

intended subject.

Tokonoma

A Tokonoma is an area found in tatami room. It’s an

architectural structure which is usually recessed and

decorated with seasonal flowers, artwork or other

objects. It is this decorative area that is meant to be a

subtle focal point of the empty room.
