First of all I want to thank the LEAA membership for electing me as your Presi-dent. It is an honor to be listed among those other past Presidents who served so honorably. I will do my best to maintain those same high standards. Feel free to contact me it there is anything that anyone needs. Here are a few things that have been happening at LEAA. A new Supper Club group has started at LEAA. They meet at 5:50pm the second Friday of each month at LEAA. This is potluck style dinning open to all members. This group seems to be growing successfully. After the election a vacant seat on the board was filled with the appointment of Marion Poggas. LEAA had terrific success with the pork sales fundraiser this year. A big thank you goes to Jeri and Randy Palmer who smoked pork roast to perfection and packaged the meat for distribution. I must say it was absolutely delicious. Hal Stewart who is a nationally know and award winning sculpture artist gave a marvelous presentation. A brainstorming session has been planned for October 10 at 10am. I encourage all members to come and participate. We need new ideas for fundraising and growing our membership as well as any other great ideas that anyone has. A benefit concert has been planned with Blend Acapella to be held at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center on November 3. Be sure and support the art center with your attendance to this evening of great family entertainment. Tickets are on sale now through the Marion Cultural and Civic Center. Later this fall, as part of our community outreach, LEAA will be hosting a painting party with the Wounded Warrior Project. The Christmas Party has been planned for the end of the year. It will be held at The Haven on Saturday, December 9, 1-4pm. More details on this will be mailed out later by postcard. So be sure and save the date for that. If you don’t receive postcard about this by the end of November then be sure and let someone know so we can make sure you get the information and you can RSVP for that party. I would also like to give a special shout out and thank all those who docent and volunteer countless hours to help keep LEAA the great organization that it is. Jane Morgan, President

Blend A Capella has partnered with LEAA for a fund raiser to benefit the art center.

Prepare yourself for a delightful and entertaining evening of 50's, 60's,

NEWS FROM ALPS, LESA & LEWS

ALPS Photography The ALPS photography group connues to grow and keep interest levels high by bringing in a variety of entertaining and informave guest

speakers. ALPS member George Stone showed us how to find a wealth of nature’s beauty without having to leave our own backyards.

George and his wife Janet plant flowers and other plants that a$ract bu$erflies, songbirds, hummingbirds, hummingbird moths, and

more. George presented a slide show his magical garden images captured with his Sony digital camera system. Also in August, ALPS mem-

ber Ron Farver gave a hands-on demonstraon of how to set up a tripod for the best angle to successfully image the solar eclipse. Our September meeng featured award winning photographer Dave Hammond of Goreville, IL. Dave spoke on preparing our photograph-

ic images for photo compeons and shows. He shared insights from his own experience as a professional photographer who enters con-

tests, as well as his experience as a photography compeon judge. Dave was the judge of last year’s LEAA Photo Invitaonal. Our “Tips

and Tricks” presentaon was given by ALPS member Rick Avery, an Illinois Master Naturalist and expert in Illinois snake species and their

behaviors. He offered the avid nature photographers in ALPS some ps for recognizing the different species of non-venomous snakes in

our region. However, Rick especially urged us to become familiar with the appearance and characteriscs of the four venomous snakes in

Illinois — copperhead, co$onmouth, and mber ra$lesnake in southern Illinois, and massasauga in northern Illinois — and to keep our

distance from them when walking trails or photographing in wooded or wetland areas.

ALPS Plans Trek to Photograph Sandhill Cranes

ALPS member Bob Gulledge is leading a trek to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife area in northern Indiana to photograph thousands of

migrang sandhill cranes on Wednesday, November 29, through Saturday, December 2. We will leave from Marion, IL, on November 29 at

approximately 7 a.m. and will arrive mid-day at Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife area. A=er checking into the motel a=er 2 p.m., we’ll make a

10-mile drive to Jasper-Pulaski where the cranes will be flying back to their roosng grounds in the golden a=ernoon light. We’ll go out

early on the mornings of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to capture the cranes’ mass departure from the roosng area, and then we will

scout the area for the cranes’ feeding locaons. Also, as on Wednesday, we will go back out to the wildlife area in the late a=ernoon for

crane imaging on Thursday and Friday. The closest motel to Jasper-Pulaski is the Oak View Motel, 605 W. Talman, in North Judson, Indiana. It is a small, but clean motel, with a

good restaurant and sports bar right next door. This hotel fills up fast, so call 574-896-3301 for your reservaons ASAP. If you have ques-

ons, call Bob Gulledge at 618-922-1257. LEWS Writer’s Society LEWS Members have been hard at work on a second volume of collecve work. Li$le Egypt Writers, Volume 2, is almost ready. We are very ex-

cited to publish more essays, short stories, art, and poetry from our talented group, and we’re currently proof-reading, eding and pre-

paring to go to press thanks to Bill Hamer’s organizaon of the project.

Congratulaons to Idella Edwards for making the ‘22 most stunning photos’ list (hummingbird) in Birds and Blooms and to Doris Frey for

her arcle, “The Bells of St. Mary”, in The Herrin Independent.
