Drainage Services Department (DSD) has been pursuing sustainable development and improvement to the environment. In the past decade, DSD paid a lot of efforts in carrying out greening works to the drainage and sewerage facilities.

Starting from several years ago, DSD has participated in BEAM Plus assessment on some facilities of the drainage and sewerage projects for demonstrating the commitment to sustainability. These projects include:

-Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme-Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A-Sewage Interception Scheme in Kowloon City -Provision of Interception Facilities at Jordan Valley Box Culvert.

Some of the facilities have been bestowed the Platinum rating in the provisional assessment while some are still being assessed.

In addition, DSD has been carrying out a number of research and development (R&D) studies with a view to improving the urban greenery and maximizing greening opportunities in drainage and sewerage facilities, including studies on green roofs, vertical greening, planting at nullahs, porous pavement, rainwater harvesting, etc. DSD has recently completed an R&D study, namely “Study of Green Roofs: Green Roof Guidelines, Water Quality and Peak Runoff”, to investigate the benefits of green roofs in runoff water quality improvement and peak runoff mitigation.
