What is Lent? The season of Lent is a 40 day journey of purification and renewal in preparation for the great celebration of Easter. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday. During Lent, the Church asks us to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446). REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: GOOD FRIDAY, April 10, 2019, is a day for fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence.
-FASTING is observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. -ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the observance of abstinence would be lifted and some other suitable observance should be made, like additional prayer time. 1) Traditional Stations of the Cross on the following Fridays of Lent at 7PM at Holy Family Church: March 13, 20, 27 & April 3. All ages are most welcome. “The Light is on For You” at St. Pius V Parish on the following Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00PM – March 11, 18, & 25 & April 1 & 8. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during this time. Come and spend a few quiet moments with the Lord. -A Lynn Catholic Community Adoration and Penance Service will be held on Monday, March 30th at 7:00PM at Sacred Heart Church, 571 Boston St. Lynn, MA. The Catholic Churches of Lynn will join together for an Evening Prayer service including, Prayer, Adoration, Reflection of God’s Merciful Healing, and individual Confessions.
