Home Appliances’ Control SystemA PROJECT BASED ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS

Presented By:RAJEEV KUMAR

What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a world-wide network of interconnected objects which are outfitted with sensors, actuators and RFID devices, each of them having the ability to communicate with each other.

Why do we need it?

• Because we are lazy!• Automating some of our tasks saves a lot of time.• Efficient power management by computers help reduce electricity bills.• It brings industry-level automation and security, which can be fully

customized by individuals without much technical knowledge.• It keeps you in full control of your home.• It is useful for Elder and Handicapped people.• IT IS THE FUTURE!

IndustrialComputing devices

Ubiquitous connectivity promises to make devices “smart”, but ONLY if they speak the same language

Devices that can’t connect across brands, categories, and operating systems will be left out

The problem?

The solution?

I have created a client-server architecture in which each device acts as a client and it interacts with the server in one unified communication protocol.

The idea

The things I want to achieve:• Control all the appliances and equipment of home via the Internet.• Eyes on the house anytime anywhere.• Customized security system.• Providing full access to the user.• Make life easy with low investment.• Increase Energy Efficiency of home.

Modules used in the project...

A leased cloud server space,

Raspberry Pi,

Arduino,

Sensors – for light, temperature, humidity, motion, water level, etc.

Output appliances – lights and fans

Web server

Security Camera

PIR sensorDetects Motion

Sends notification to Arduino, which in turn passes the notification to Pi and then Pi forwards the notification to the remote server.

The data can be true or false. That way, we can determine if any motion is detected.

DHT22 Temperature & Humidity sensorMeasures room temperature and humidity.

This data can be logged and is useful to find out real-time temperature and humidity data.

The data from this sensor is refreshed every 2 seconds, and it gives an accuracy of -40 to 80⁰C and 0-100% RH.

LDRsIt measures the light intensity coming from outside one’s home.

This data is also logged in real-time. The values range from 0 to 1024 depending on how much light falls on the sensor.

Camera over IPThe camera streams JPEG images over the Internet, which can either be seen in real-time or can be recorded to some attached memory.

The camera stream and settings can both be accesses over the Internet.

It also has features like activation through motion detection.

Light bulbsLow Current Lamp.

A 1.35 Volt/ 0.06 Amp incandescent lightbulb with E10 miniature screw base.

An average life of 50 hours.

What does this mean?

• All the sensors provide real-time values over the Internet. This data is easily accessible and can be used to monitor various things like environmental changes or activities happening nearby.

• The devices can be triggered remotely through the Internet. This means we can either program them to operate automatically or control them manually, or even do both!

• If we want, we can acquire data from the sensors and operate devices according to the values from these sensors. This would mean that the devices are “talking” to each other.

For developers

• The open platform allows developers and hobbyists to create their own kind of sensors or devices. All they have to do is to match the interfaces to the ones supported with our infrastructure and use our APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

• Developers can make applications that perform certain tasks with the existing devices.

For end-users

• Customized settings for user.

• Free to add or remove Appliances.

• Platform independent.

Conclusion

My project provides a client-server architecture in which each device acts as a client and it interacts with the server in one unified communication protocol unlike others. All the appliances and equipment of home are controlled via the Internet. This also facilitates the user to keep their eyes on their houses anytime anywhere. There is an option for Customized security system as full access is provided to the user.

This product may have great potential for marketing in future.
