Dear Parent / Carer,
This booklet has been produced to provide you with more information about Home Learning at Settle College. It
provides you with information about each subject to enable you to support your child’s progress through their studies.
Introduction to Home Learning
Home Learning is an important part of the learning process. It involves encouraging students to take greater
responsibility for their own learning. It helps them to become more self-reliant and independent. Home Learning also
helps parents to take a more active part in their child’s progress. Finally, it can lead to more effective use of lesson
time. Home Learning should always be purposeful. The aim is for classwork and home learning to complement each
other, one supporting and enhancing the other.
Aims of Home Learning
• Consolidate and extend work covered in class or prepare for new learning activities;
• Access resources not available in the classroom;
• Develop research skills;
• Have an opportunity for independent work;
• Show progress and understanding;
• Provide feedback in the evaluation of teaching;
• To enhance study skills e.g. planning, time management and self-discipline;
• To encourage students to take ownership and responsibility for learning;
• Engage parental co-operation and support;
• Create channels for home- school dialogue.
This Guide This guide outlines the sort of activities you and your child can expect at the different stages in each subject area.
There are also some suggestions about the amount of time to spend on home learning. Where students feel they have
the capacity for additional home learning there are also some suggested independent study tasks for each subject.
Guided Hours for Home Learning:
Year 7/8 – 1 hour per day
Year 9 – 1 to 2 hours per day
Years 10/11- 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day
Home Learning Club Not all home learning needs to be done at home. In fact, for some students who find it hard to work at home, or for
some tasks which may require resources (books, software, equipment) more readily available at school, it is necessary
or desirable to carry out the task at school.
Use of Moodle Our virtual learning platform - Moodle- comprises a wide range of information and provides extension material for
home learning.
Controlled Assessment The Controlled Assessment calendar can be found on our website. This shows the deadlines for Controlled
Assessment in each subject.
The role of the Parents
The role of the parent is crucial if a child is to gain success from home learning. Reinforcing its value through positive
feedback will give students the confidence to persevere, work hard and reach high standards of achievement.
Parents can assist by:
• Providing a table, chair and a quiet place to work.
• Negotiating with the student when homework is to be done as a student's free play is important too.
• Checking the time spent on individual tasks.
• Ensuring that outside clubs do not hamper a child's quality of work and put a child under undue pressure.
• Checking presentation and content of all homework being returned to school.
• Signing the homework planner each week.
• Providing the school with information about any problems through the student planner or by contacting the
school directly.
• Get your son/daughter to tell you what they have learnt after completing a Controlled Assessment or home
learning task. This is a very powerful way of enforcing what they have learnt.
• Offer challenges to test them ‘Right, you have got 5 minutes to tell me all you know about….’ Or ‘Give me 4
uses for….’
• Offer small short-term rewards to encourage motivation.
Exams
• Help your son/daughter to plan a revision timetable. There are blank revision timetables on the College
website in the Exams section. It is easier to stick to the plan if everyone at home knows about it!
• Encourage short bursts of revision – up to 40 minutes. This will help to keep learning fresh in the mind.
• Remind your son/daughter to study the meaning of words and phrases used in exam questions such as
‘Explain’, ‘Evaluate’
• Encourage your son/daughter to be creative in his/her revision by creating ‘spider diagrams’ summarising
the key points from a topic or asking them to ‘summarise the topic in 6 key words…’
• The formula ‘Study it, cover it, summarise it and check it’ can be useful.
• Working with a friend can be useful. Having to explain things to someone else, makes for effective learning.
Parents signing half-termly assessments
Once per half term, every subject will conduct a formal piece of assessed work, where the work is graded/levelled,
teachers’ comment on it and target future improvements. Students’ then respond to the teacher’s marking using
purple pens in order to close gaps in learning. This work goes home to parents and we ask parents to read the
assessment/comments and sign the silver sticker. We hope this will improve the dialogue between teacher, student
and parent and it will enable parents to track progress. The assessed piece of work can take a wide variety of forms.

Topics: Students will be learning about some of the main contentious issues that affect the world we live in,
to name but a few: Conservation and Sustainability, Global Warming, Ice Ages and Conflict. We use examples
from a range of locations, at a variety of scales. Geographical skills of map and atlas work are practised
throughout the course with a strong emphasis on GIS.
Types of Home Learning: debates, essays, tests and presentations. We use the Independent Study model
for home learning. Six Independent Studies will be set in the year, one in each half term. The home learning
instructions are given to students at a relevant point in the half term. Each unit of work will be formally
assessed. Students will have a silver sticker in their books for this piece of work. This is for you to look at and
sign.

Topics: Syllabus AQA GCSE Performing Arts
Unit 1: Skills development. Assessed by a performance and a portfolio outlining: skills learned, planning and research, practical activities and evaluation.
Unit 2: Showcase worked to an externally set brief. Assessment includes the practical performance (in front of
the examiner), three observations showing how the piece developed and a written evaluation.
Types of Home Learning: Drama home learning is set weekly and can take the form of written work,
research, a reading task, on-line learning and rehearsal. The teacher assesses both practical and written work
and feedback is given. Nearer to a practical exam, rehearsals during lunchtime and after school will increase.
Towards the end of the course, an external examiner will come in to mark the final unit. Students must
complete a record of their progress in a Drama log book. This must be completed each lesson in order to
provide sufficient evidence to support achievement in the qualification.
Extension work: More able students might organise or coordinate their group. Put together an outline or
ideas for a piece or include in their folder details of external lessons in music or dance or productions they are
taking part in.

Topics:
Unit 1: Investigating Small Business (worth 25% of the GCSE, exam in June)
Unit 2: Controlled Assessment (25%, completed in February)
Unit 3: Building a Business (50%, completion in June)
Types of Home Learning:
Pupils are asked to complete activities based on topics that have been carried out in their lessons. Activities
tend to be based around a business that pupils are familiar with. Home Learning can be a mix of multiple
choice questions, short or longer writing activities and tend to be similar to the questions in their GCSE
examinations. Home Learning can also be investigations where findings are put together on a PowerPoint or
collecting tasks where pupils are asked to bring in a sample product.
Early in the course it is expected that pupils will purchase a GCSE textbook and workbook from the
department. This allows pupils to develop the knowledge and understanding at their own pace.
For Unit 2, students have to interview a business owner as part of their controlled assessment task. They have
up to 6 hours to complete this and activities can involve preparing and asking questionnaires, taking
photographs, collecting promotional materials etc. This will be their main home learning tasks in early
February.
Before Easter, all pupils will be issued with revision materials that require completion at home. At this point
when you want to check home learning in Business Studies, ask to see their revision pack called ‘Revision in
a Nutshell’ which consists of past exam papers, activities and exam technique exercises.
