This series of word-lists is the outgrowth of the conviction
that Ae ordinary way of acquiring Homeric vocabulary is both
wasteful and ineffectual. The chief difficulty in learning to read
Homer lies in the large and varied character of the vocabulary
required, and these lists have been prepared in order to help the
student to leam Homeric words in a systematic and practical way.
A moderate number of words learned each day and constantly
reviewed will rapidly enlarge the student's working vocabulary,
and steadily better his equipment for sight-reading. He will
gradually be emancipated from the constant use of the lexicon,
while his knowledge of Greek words will gain rather than lose in
precision and permanence. Each day a few new words should be
learned, and those previously learned should be rapidly reviewed.
The student will very shortly find himself possessed of a vocabu-
lary which will greatly facihtate the work of translation, and
make the reading of Homer at sight a pleasant and natural exer-
cise. In short, it is believed that the mastery of these lists will
secure for the student that much-talked-of thing, the ability to
read Homer; and make of his study of it a means, not simply of
discipline, but of enjoyment and culture.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
The demand for a new edition of these lists has given us the
opportunity to correct some misprints and to modify a few defini-
tions. The numberings remain unchanged throughout. Attention
may be called to the fact that in the statistics of verb occurrences,
compounds have been reckoned with their primitives. In this we
have followed the procedure of Gehring's Index Homericus, upon
the materials of which our statistics are based.
