Changes at the Library Over thepast fewmonths theLibraryhascompleted a series of key administrative ap-pointmentsincluding: ReplacingDanTraisterisaVisitingDirec-torforSpecialCollections,Dr. michael Ryan,formerUniversity�rchivistatChicagoandmorerecentlydirectorofcollectionsandcuratorofspecialcollectionsatStanford.Dr.RyanholdsanM.�.andaPh.D.inhistoryfromNYUandhas lectured in that field at Chicago and Stanford, aswellaspublishingoncollectiondevelopment,specialcollections,history,andliterature.Inhisnewpost,Dr.Ryanhasoverallresponsibilityfordevelopment and management of the specialcollectionsandreaderservicesforfacultyandgraduateresearchers.HealsoworkscloselywiththeLibraryFriendsandwithfacultyonprograminitiatives. Associate Dean for the College: Dr. Santirrocco Dr.MatthewSantirocco,professorofclassicalstudies,isthenewassociatedeanoftheSchoolof�rts&SciencesforUndergraduateEducation.He took office this semester to succeed Dr. Nor-man�dler,nowatNortheasternUniversity. “We’re delighted to have someone who is so committedtoundergraduateeducationtakeonthisdemandingand importantposition,” saysDr. Rosemary Stevens, Dean of S�S.“MattSantiroccohastheabilitytocommunicatewithand listen to students, make difficult decisions, andmaketheundergraduateexperienceatPennthe best undergraduate experience anywhere.Hewillcarryouthisjob,notonlyexceptionallywell,butalsowithgreatpizzazz.” Thenewundergraduatedeanparticipatesinlong-range planning for Arts & Sciences’ cur-riculum,budget,residentiallivingoptions,andthecreationofnewopportunitiesforstudyabroad. DrSantiroccoisaColumbiaalumnuswhotookhisPh.D.thereafterearninghisM.�.fromCambridgeUniversity.BeforejoiningPenn,hetaughtatColumbia,Pittsburgh,andEmorywherehewasclassicsdepartmentchairfrom1987to1989.

JohnClaytonKohl,well-knowneducator,publicservantandtransportationengineer,diedinIrving,Texasonthe18thofMarchattheageof84.HewasEmeritusProfessorofCivilEngineeringsincehisretirementfromtheUniversityofPennsylvaniain1976. ProfessorKohlwasanativeofNewYorkCity.HeattendedOberlinCollegeandUniversityofMichigan,wherehegraduatedin1929.FollowingsevenyearsofteachingasinstructorinCivilEngineeringattheCarnegieInstituteofTechnology,hejoinedPittsburghPlateGlassCompanyandlaterPittsburghCorningCorporation,whereheworkedasLaboratoryDirectoruntil1946. �tthattimeJohnKohlreturnedtoacademia:hejoinedtheDepartmentofCivilEngineeringattheUniversityofMichiganas�ssistant,later�ssociateandFullProfessor.In1952healsobecametheDirectoroftheTransportationInstituteattheUniversityofMichigan.In1961,he received the University’s Distinguished Faculty Award. When the Kennedy Administration established the first Federal Government full position inchargeofurbantransportationin1961,JohnKohlwasselectedforit:hebecame�ssistant�dministratorforTransportationinHousingandHomeFinance�gency.Later,hewas�ct-ing Director of the Office of Transportation in HUD, predecessor of UMTA, present Federal Transit�dministration.From1966to1968ProfessorKohlwasExecutiveSecretaryoftheDivisionofEngineeringintheNational�cademyofSciences. In 1970 Governor Cahill of New Jersey appointed Professor Kohl to his Cabinet.�sCommissionerofTransportationforNewJersey,JohnKohlreorganizedtheDepartmentfrommodaltofunctionalstructure.In1974,hejoinedtheUniversityofPennsylvania,wherehewasProfessorofCivilEngineering-Transportationuntilhisretirementin1976.Evenafterretirement,hewasSeniorVisitingFellowatPrincetonUniversityuntil1981. ProfessorKohlhadabroadvisionandexcellentunderstandingoftransportationasamul-timodalsystem,longbeforemanytransportationprofessionalsobtainedthisunderstanding.Inadditiontohisteachingandadministrativeachievements,hehadanumberofpublications,presentations,membershipsandawards.JohnKohlhasbeenlistedin“WhoIsWhoin�merica”since1967,andmostrecentlyin“WhoIsWhointheWorld.” Among his colleagues—transportation professionals, public officials and friends—John Kohlwasadmiredandappreciatedforhiscontributionsinacademia,inpublicservice,inconsulting,and,particularly,inremovingbarriersandstimulatinginteractionsandcoopera-tionamongthesegroups.Thetransportationandcivilengineeringprofessionshavelostanoutstandingseniormember;wehavelostanappreciatedcolleagueandfriend.
