Sequence ­ collection ordered such that it has a first member, second member, third member, and so on.

Mathematically, think of a sequence as a ___________ whose domain is the set of positive integers, written in subscript notation.

‐ Definition of Sequence

An infinite sequence is a function whose domain is the set of positive integers. The function values

are the terms of the sequence. A sequence is finite if it only asks for the first n positive integers.

Types of Sequences

There are two different types of sequences that we have seen and talked about so far today:

Arithmetic Sequences

A sequence is arithmetic if the differences between consecutive terms are the same.

For instance the sequence 1,4,7,10,13,16,19... is an arithmetic sequence.

Geometric Sequences

A sequence is geometric if the ratios of consecutive terms are the same.

For instance the sequence 2,4,8,16,... is a geometric sequence.
