During2007severalnewfacultyandstaffmembersjoinedSOLES,andtheyarefeaturedinthisissueofHorizons.ComingfromCanadaisDr.CatherineHands,whoisinthepublic/privateschoolleadershipspecializationintheDepartmentofLeadershipStudies.WehaveourfirstProfessorofPractice—RichThome—aformerschoolsuperintendent.Richisassistinguswithoutreachtolocalschooldistricts.Dr.MarieSchrup,anadministratorintheSweetwaterUnionHighSchoolDistrict,issupportingtheDepartmentofLearningandTeachingonissuesofcredentialingandeducationpolicy;herexpertiseisinvaluabletothedepartment.AnothernewcolleagueisScottHimelstein,formerCaliforniaDeputySecretaryofEducationandActingSecretaryofEducation.ScottjoinedusasthefoundingdirectoroftheCenterforEducationPolicyandLaw(CEPAL)whichwewilltellyoumoreaboutinfuturepublications.

TheDean’sofficehassomeveryexcitingchangesaswell.LastSeptember,LindaDewsbecameournewAssistantDean.Also,someofyoumanyknowDr.SteveGelb,fromtheDepartmentofLearningandTeaching,whoisnowtheAssociateDean.

InthisissueofHorizonswehighlighttheimportantworkbeingdonebyourMath,ScienceandTechnologyEducation(MSTE)program’sfacultyandstudents.Drs.Buczynski,Hansen,InoueandSpencerarethefulltimefacultyintheDepartmentofLearningandTeachingwhoaredoingveryexcitingresearchwithourstudents,andincollaborationwithschooldistrictandcommunity-basedorganizations.

Finally,wewanttoinviteyouandyourfamiliestoparticipateinanewtraditionatSOLES—andit’sfree.OnFridayJuly4,2008wewillbecelebratingIndependenceDayontheWestTerraceofHillHall.Theterraceoverlooksthebayandoceanandtheviewofthefireworksshouldbequitespectacular.So,pleaseplanonjoiningus.Wewillhavebeveragesandmunchiesforeveryoneandwewillleavethebuildingopenforthoseofyouhaven’tseenityetorwanttoshowittoyourfamilyandfriends.

Thereasonfortheshortageseemsobvious:Overthepasttwodecades,studentenrollmentshavebeenincreasing,whilequalifiedteachersareleavingtheprofessionineverincreasingnumbers.Inresponse,we’veseenawiderangeofteacherrecruitmentprogramsbeingimplemented,suchasTeachforAmerica,aPeaceCorps-likeprogram.Anotherrecruitmentstrategy,financialincentives,includeseverythingfrom

signingbonusesandstudentloanforgivenesstohousingassistanceandtuitionreimbursement.

ButatSOLES,theMath,ScienceandTechnologyEducation(MSTE)graduateprogramhasadoptedamorebroad-basedstrategy.Inadditiontorecruitingstudentswhoarejustbeginningtheircareers,MSTEencouragesmoreexperiencedstudentstoapply:careerchangerswhomayhavealwayshadadreamof

onedayteaching,aswellasexistingmathandscienceteacherslookingtosharpentheirskills.

“We’reseeingmoreandmorecareerchangerswhowanttobecometeachers,”reportsSandyBuczynski,Ph.D.,assistantprofessorofscienceeducationandMSTEprogramcoordinator.“Justthissemesterwehadtwoseasonedprofessionalsentertheprogram,onearetiringengineerandtheotheraformerphysicaltherapist.”

Everywhereyoulookinthenewsthesedays,there’ssomethingaboutthecriticalshortageofqualifiedteachersinmathematicsandthesciences.Inhis2006StateoftheUnionaddress,PresidentBushspecificallycalledfortherecruitmentof30,000newmathandscienceteachers.Meanwhile,theNationalAcademyofSciencesandotherhigh-profilegroupsarepredictingthattheteachershortage,andtheresultingpoorqualityofmathandscienceeducationinourschools,willnegativelyimpactthefutureeconomicwell-beingofthenation as a whole.

Veteranteachersareanothergroupthat’sbeingactivelyrecruitedbyMSTE.Initially,scholarshipfundingfortheprogram’sfirstcohortwasprovidedthroughaCaliforniaMath-SciencePartnershipgrantaimedathelpingexistingmathandscienceteachersbecomebetteratwhattheydo.Asaresult,thefirstgroupof25studentstoreceivetheirmaster’sdegreethroughMSTEwereallveteranteachers.

“Teacherswithafewyearsundertheirbeltknowwherethechallengeslieandareinamuchbetterpositiontodeepentheirskills,”saysJoiSpencer,Ph.D.,assistantprofessorofmatheducationatSOLES.“They’veexperiencedthepainthatcomeswhenkidsdon’t‘getit,’andthey’rehighlymotivatedtofindasolution.”

AccordingtoBuczynski,makingsurethatteachers“getit”firstiskey.“Wethinkit’simportantforteacherstohaveanunderstandingofthebasicconceptsthatunderliethecontentthey’reteaching,”shesays.“It’sthisconceptualunderstandingthatgivesgoodteacherstheconfidencetobecomegreatteachers.”

Thetwo-yearMSTEprogramusesacohortmodel,wherethesamegroupofstudentsstarttogether,takethesamecoursestogether,andultimatelyfinishtogether.AccordingtoSpencer,thecohortmodelisagrowingtrendingraduateschools,especiallyinprofessionssuchasteaching,nursingorlaw.“Studentsarelesslikelytodropoutwhenthere’sanendinsight,”shepointsout.“Infact,MSTE’sfirstcohorthadazeroattritionrate.Pluseveryoneisproceedingatthesamepace,sothere’sneverthepressureoffeelingeitherrushedorheldback.”

Beforereceivingamaster’sdegreeinMSTE,eachcandidateisrequiredtocompleteanactionresearchprojectandpresentthefindingsinapublicforum.Unlikeamoretraditionalthesisproject,whereresearchisoftenbasedonahypotheticalquestion,actionresearchusesareallifeclassroomproblemasitsfocus.“OurMSTEcandidatesaredevelopingas‘teacher-scholars’,”saysBuczynski,“expandingtheirinsightsregardingeffectiveteachingpractices.”

“Anumberofresearchprojectsthatourstudentshavedonehavehadanincredibleimpactontheirstudents,”Spenceradds.Asanexample,shecitesanExcelTMprogramcreatedbyoneMSTEstudentthathelpschildrenunderstandtheconceptofcommondenominators.

“It’sveryhandson,withteachersworkingwiththeirownstudents,”sheadds,“andthegoodnewsis,intheend,thekidsbenefit.”

Duringthefallof2007anumberofSOLESAlumnimettoorganizeanalumnicouncilthatwouldhelpfosterandenhancerelationsbetweencurrentSOLESstudentsandSOLESalumni.

New SOLES Alumni Council being formed

SanDiego-basedA-1SelfStoragehasawardedtheCenterforNonprofitResearchatSOLESamajorendowmenttoenhanceresearcheffortsandfurtherthestudyofcriticalissuesaffectingSanDiego’snonprofitsector.

TheCasterFamilyCenterforNonprofitResearchstudiesissuesofstrategicimportancetothenonprofitsectorinordertoidentifyandadvancebestpracticesinleadershipandmanagement.Theresultsofthesestudiesbenefitthosewholeadnonprofits,aswellasthemillionsofcitizenstheyservelocallyandnationally.

“Thisgenerousgiftensuresthatwewillcontinuetheworkfirstbegunwhenwewereestablishedin2004withsupportfromTheWestreichFoundationandtheBruceT.HalleFamilyFoundation,”sayscenterfounderandco-directorPatLibby.“Thenonprofitsectorisgrowingexponentiallyandconstitutesthe6thlargesteconomyintheworld.Thatleadershipmusthaveaccesstodataandresourcesthatwillhelpstrengthenthesector.”

Since2004,theCenterforNonprofitResearchatSOLEShasproducedseveralsignificantreportsaffectingthenonprofitsectorandhasbecomearespectedthinktankfornonprofitleaders.

“TheCasterCompaniesenthusiasticallysupportthehighqualityworkproducedbytheCenter.Weunderstandthebenefitsofprovidingleadersofnonprofitswiththehighestqualityeducationfocusedontrainingresponsible,ethicalleaders,”saidTerryCaster,founderoftheCasterCompanies,ownersofA-1SelfStorage.

Ordainedasarabbiin1985,LaurieCoskeyenteredthedoctoralprograminleadershipstudiesatSOLESmorethanadecadelater.“Itwasmycallingasarabbithatledmetotheteachingsoftheprophets,whowerepassionateadvocatesforprofoundandmeaningfulsocialchange,”sherecalls.“Iwaslookingforadoctoralprogramwithastrongethicalfoundationthatwasalsofocusedoncommunityandleadership.”

AccordingtoRabbiCoskey,theleadershipskillsshegainedatSOLESandtheworkshedidtherehelpedprepareherforhercurrentroleasexecutivedirectoroftheInterfaithCommitteeforWorkerJustice(ICWJ)ofSanDiego–apositionsheassumedin2001,shortlyafterearningherDoctorateinEducationatUSD.“OurmissionatICWJistoeducateandmobilizetheSanDiegoreligiouscommunityandpeopleoffaithtoliftuptheissuesfacinglow-wage

workersandtheirfamiliesandhelptoendpovertyinSanDiegothroughimprovedwages,benefitsandworkingconditions,”shesays.

“It’stheon-sitejobsthatcan’tbeexported–janitorial,caretakers,childcareworkers,andserviceindustryworkers–whereyou’llfindthemostlow-wageworkerswhoarebeingforcedtochoosebetweenrentandfoodormedicinefortheirchildren.Noreligioustraditionacceptsthiskindofpoverty,”Coskeypointsout.

TheSanDiegoICWJwasestablishedin1998tohelplow-wageworkersandtheirfamiliestolivesustainableliveswithdignity.Asadvocatesfortheworkingpoor,ICWJmembersfrommorethanadozenfaithtraditionsutilizesuchtacticsasletterwritingcampaigns,meetingswithworkersandmanagement,

andorganizingandparticipatingindelegationsandvigils.

CoskeyisconvincedthatherworkatUSDhelpedlaythegroundworkforhersuccessatICWJ.“MydissertationatSOLESstudiedthepropertiesofcollaborationandsharedvisionamongcommunityleadersinSanDiego,”sherecalls.“ItwasacriticalsteppingstonetowardtheadvocacyworkI’mdoingtoday.“

Rabbi Coskey has been selected to receive the Arthur Hughes Career Achievement Award, to be presented at the Alumni Honor Awards banquet on April 26, 2008.
