HOW SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN AFFECT ATHLETES

PURPOSE

• This study looked further into the issue of sleep deprivation affecting athletes, comparing Concordia University athletes to this issue, and if sleep deprivation affects their performances.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

• A significant amount of research has been devoted to finding if sleep does affect athletic performance. Researchers have been struggling with this topic with some finding significant information about sleep in athletics while other studies have found no impact.

• More recent research has been agreeing that sleep is essential to an athlete

• By doing more extensive, reliable research results will most likely help athletes, coaches, trainers, and other facilitators understand the importance of sleep and wanting the best performances in sports.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH

• **Based on more recent research:

• Generally sleep loss produces general decline in performance

• Can affect overall growth, muscle growth and repair, bone building, & metabolism

• Has been linked to obesity & anxiety problems

• Can affect focus mentally and emotionally

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

• How does sleep affect the body?

• How does sleep affect athletic performance?

• Does physical activity affect sleep?

• Does the amount of sleep matter for athletic performance?

HOW IMPORTANT IS SLEEP?

SYMPTOMS

Many of Concordia’s student-athletes do not receive the adequate amount of sleep

Many of Concordia’s student-athletes do not utilize naps

Over half feel they do not receive enough sleep for maximum performance

School/Homework is the highest ranked reason for not getting enough sleep

CONCLUSION

For athletes to realize how important sleep is

For teachers/coaches to help make a balance in a student-athletes life

For coaches and athletes to realize one easy/healthy way to enhance athletic performances

USE FOR STUDY

Broad topic

Use bigger population/different levels of athletics

Hands on study of sleep habits
