How to

use

quotation

marks

correctly

Quotations

• In written conversation, a direct quotation gives a speaker’s exact words.

• Set it off with quotation marks and capitalize the first word.

• Rule 1:– Use a comma to set

off a direct quotation from the other words in a sentence. Place the comma outside the quotation marks at the beginning of a quotation and inside the quotation marks at the end of a quotation.

Quotation Guidelines

Examples

• John F. Kennedy proclaimed, “Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.”

Examples

•“Either you’re the one erasing or you’re the one being erased,” added Jim Carrey.

Quotation Guidelines

• Rule 2:– If the quotation is

a question or an exclamation, place the question mark or an exclamation point inside of the quotation marks. Do not add a comma.

Examples

•“How come you never see a headline like 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?” Jay Leno asked.

Quotation Guidelines

• Rule 3:– Sometimes a

quotation is divided and each part is in quotation marks. If the second part of the divided quotation continues the original sentence, begin it with a lower case letter. If it starts a new sentence, use a capital letter.

Examples

•“Dream as if you’ll live forever,” replied James. “Live as if you’ll die today.”

Examples

•“If you don’t like the road you’re walking,” Dolly replied, “then start paving a new one.”
