Evenwhenseated,herteamcaneffortlesslyfrontloadtwopaperrolls.“Wecanalsoeasilycheckthetouchscreenwiththeperfectlightconditions.Itissimpletomonitormediarolls,viewprinterstatusandtrackjobsduringprinting,”shesays.

Theabilitytotakediversestacks,fromA4toA0sizemedia,inflat,collatedprintsimprovesproductivity:“Theintegratedoutputstackingtray,evenwhenotherteamsareprinting, hasmadeoutputclutterathingofthepast,”Mottexplains.

Secondly,performance.Kovacsaysthetrueprintpreviewreduceserrorsandeliminateswaste,andbeingabletoprintallfilesacrossarangeofmediaimprovesflexibility.Butitistheimagequalitythatistheessentialfactor.“Amongourpeers,thereisafineappreciationforqualitydraughtsmanship.TheHPDesignjetT1500ePrinterproducesaprintofsuchqualitythatitcatchestheireye–theyaresurprisedwhenweexplainitisnottheoriginal.

Asdirectorof2112Ai(Architecturalintelligence)100YC (100YearCity),TomKovacspendsmuchofhistimeanticipatingwhatthefuturemayholdforarchitectureanddesign.Kovac,ProfessorofArchitectureatAustralia’sRoyalMelbourneInstituteofTechnology(RMIT)University,isnotalone.Alongwithothereminentarchitects,heisamajorcollaboratoroninternationalprojectsdesignedtocreate,enrichandtransformthewaycommunitieswillthriveintomorrow’sworld.

Onesignificantprojectthatservesasanexampleis TheMaribor’svisionforthefuture-MariborisSlovenia’ssecondlargestcityandtheEuropeanCapitalofCulturein2012.TheMaribor100YCprojectisadesignvisionforthecity’s100yeardevelopment,envisagingtheworldof2112. Theprogramincludesonlinemoduleswithleadinginternational architecture schools. It utilises the resources of23universitiescoveringits100-plusmultidisciplinaryprojects,harnessingthecollaborationandimaginationof 450architecturalanddesignstudents.

Enabling productive collaboration

Thelogisticsofthecollaborationaredaunting. Speciallycreatedonlinecollaborationsoftware, DesignResearch(D-RES)helpsestablishdirections andagreeuponparameters.Togetthemaximumproductivityfromthesessions,thecollaboratorsdiscussanddefinethespecificationoftheoutput-printeddrawings,rendersanddetailedplans.Thesearetheshared springboardforconvertingideasintopracticaldesign.

Ina12-weekperiodtensofthousandsofdrawingsand 2.1millionfilesareexchangedwiththeD-RESplatformfortheMaribor100YCproject.TheprecisionandqualitydemandedintheprintoutputofMaribor100YCplansanddrawingsisabsolute.

Theprintoutputmustmeetexhibitionpresentationstandards,asKovacexplains:“Achievingthedesiredoutput iscrucial.Theimagequalityissacrosanct.Weneedtosee theresultintheprintedformexactlyasitwasdefined. Theresolution,thecolouringandthehighqualityofthe lineworkisvital.

“Then,forinstance,wecanimmediatelydistinguishandreadbetweenthecomplexdifferentiationofthethickandthinoutlines.Thesearesooftenthecodethatunlocksthecriticaldimensionsofanarchitecturalplan.”

Havingdefinedthekeyparametersthataprinterneedstomeetinthehighlydemandingfieldofarchitecturaldesignimaging,Kovacdecidedtotestthe36-inch,tworoll HPDesignjetT1500ePrinteratRMITUniversity.KovacsaysthathisteamwelcomedthethreekeyareasofinnovationwherebytheHPDesignjetT1500ePrinteriseliminatingwhathedescribesas“thehorrendouspatternofhitandmissprinting”thathadpreviouslybeenthenorm.
