1 Peter 5.5-6

“…God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”

Pride demands that God bless me in light of what I think I deserve.

Grace will only deal with me on the basis of what is in God (love), not on the basis of anything in me.

King Nebuchadnezzar is a classic example of both the downfall of pride and the exaltation God gives when we honor him. (Daniel 4.28-37)

What is humility?

Submission. It is the ability to cheerfully put away our own agenda for God’s.

How is humility cultivated?

1. God cultivates humility in us ‘externally’ by the experiences of life.

a. Through the discipline of diligence in our work.

b. God uses the difficulties of life.

2. God cultivates humility in us ‘internally’ by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 11.28-30

What does it mean to be exalted?

1. Exaltation does not always mean the same thing it does in worldly terms.

Luke 22.24-27

2. Exaltation takes place in God’s time.

3. Exaltation is a sure promise from the Lord.
