A Brief Overview of theGastrointestinal System
Over your lifetime you will ingest approximately 60 tons of food that will ultimately pass through yourgastrointestinal tract.4Thereisnodoubtthatfoodisextremelyimportantforwellbeing,asitprovidesthevitalnutrients that are essential for a healthy life. However, thepassageof this food through yourgastrointestinaltractisalsoapotentialthreattoyourhealth.Digestingfoodintoday’sindustrializedworldof“Franken-Foods”(atermdescribingfoodproductsthatarehighlyrefined,prepackaged,highcalorie,lownutrients,andladenwithchemicals)breaksdowntheprotectivebarrierinyourintestinesandexposesyourbodytoharmfulmicrobessuchasviruses,bacteria,moldsandfungus.Additionally,exposuretotoxicchemicalsresultsinhavocnotonlyinthegut,butalsothroughoutyourentirebody.

The Widespread Consequences ofLeaky Gut Syndrome
This part of the discussion reveals an often-overlooked cause and effect ofmuch of the chronic disease thatplaguesmankind.Whenanunauthorizedsubstanceentersthebodythroughaleakygutbarrier,thatsubstanceiscalledanantigen.Anantigencouldbeavirus,bacteria,fungus,intactfoodprotein,chemicaltoxin,etc.Anythingthatisforeigninthebodyandthatdoesnotsupporthealthandvitalitycanbedefinedasanantigen.Antigensareabletoenterthebloodstreamfromoneoftwoways:throughtheskin,orthemucusmembranesfrommouthtoanus,asbothportalsofentryaretechnicallyoutsidethebody.Thesetwoportalsofentryaretheonlywayantigens(harmful,foreignsubstances)canenterthebody.Thedigestivetract,bytheway,hasasurfaceareasolargethatifitwerestretchedoutflatitwouldcoveranentiretenniscourt!
Recall thatyouaredesignedwithapproximately70%of the immunesystemaroundyourgut,becausethat ishowmostantigensenterthebodyandpenetrateintothebloodstream.Therefore,ahealthygutbarrierisvitaltooverall health.

Approximately 50million Americans suffer from some type of autoimmune disease.7 This is the number onecondition thatplaguesAmericans.Even thoughmorepeopledie fromheartdiseaseandcancer, interestingly,researchisindicatingthatleakygutmaycontributetocancerandheartdisease.Autoimmunediseasesarethethirdleadingcauseofmorbidity(rateofdisease)andmortality(deathrateofdisease)intheindustrializedworld8, justbehindheartdiseaseandcancerrespectively.Becauseoftheoften-overlookedconnectionbetweenthegutanddiseasesofall sorts, ahealthy intestinal liningcouldpreventandperhapsevencuremuchof thechronicdiseasesthathaveplaguedmodernman.PerhapsHippocrateswascorrect:“Alldiseasebeginsinthegut!”
However, leaky gut does not stop at autoimmune disease; it has been linked to multi-organ system failure, and systemic (whole body) disease and immune dysfunction.9 It has also been associatedwith a number ofinflammatoryconditionssuchasasthma,eczema,psoriasis,andCrohn’sdisease.10

Keeping the Gut Barrier HealthyAt thispoint youmaybeaskingyourself,“How does one prevent the break down of the intestinal lining, leading towards leaky gut allowing bad things to enter into my body?”
Here are three key action steps to keep the gut barrier healthy:
1. Ensureproperdigestionofkeynutrientsthattheintestinalcellsneedtofunctionproperly.
2. Eliminatetoxins(“Franken-Foods”)fromthegastrointestinaltract.
3. Maintaintheidealratioof85%“goodbacteria”(knownasprobioticsand/or intestinalmicroflora)to15%“badbacteria.”11
Maintaining your intestinal microflora is perhaps the single most important step youcan take to protect your health.
Theterm,“probiotic”isacompoundwordmeaning, prolife.Itreferstothetrillionsofhealthfulbacteriathatlinetheintestinaltractandpositivelyaltertheintestinalmicroflorabalancebyinhibitingthegrowthofharmfulbacteria, promotinggooddigestion, reducing toxins, andboosting immune function, whichwill increase resistance toinfections.Whenyouhaveflourishingcoloniesofprobioticsyouarebetterequippedtocombatthedevelopmentofmanydifferentchronicdiseases,includingobesity.12

Signs that your intestinal dysfunction may be more advanced and that you may have an imbalance of healthy versus unhealthy bacteria, are as follows:
• Gasandbloating • Constipationand/ordiarrhea • Sinus/Allergyissues • Unexplainedmuscleandjointpain • Fatigue • Headaches • Sugarcravings,especiallyforheavilyrefinedcarbohydrates • Unrelentingweightgain • Frequentillness • Depression • Sleepissues
Perhapsyouarelikethemajorityofthepopulation, whichisseverelydeficientingoodbacteria.Therearemanyreasonsthatmaycontributetothisproblem, butmanyofthemarelifestyleandenvironmentalfactorsthatcanbeeasily controlled. These include, but are not limited to:
• Antibiotics:FouroutoffiveAmericansareprescribedantibioticseveryyear,makingantibioticslikelythenumberonecauseofimbalancebetween“good”bacteriaand“bad”bacteria,knownas“dysbiosis.”15Dysbiosisoccursbecauseantibioticsdonotrecognize“good”bacteriafrom“bad”bacteria.Thus,theykillallbacteria,includingthegoodmicroflorathatliveinyourgut.Thiscansignificantlydecreaseyourhealthybacteria,whichmayleadtoanynumberofnumeroushealthconsequences.Evenifyoudonottakeprescriptionantibiotics,they can still influence your health, as they are in products you ingest regularly, such as commercially raised meatsanddairy,bothofwhichtendtobeladenwithantibiotics.Thisalonecandisruptflorabalance.
• NSAIDS: Abusing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate pain such as Aspirin, Advil,Indomethacin, etc. inhibitsgrowthofhealthyprobioticbacteria, whichcancauseabacterial imbalance inyourintestinesleadingtoleakygut.
• Sweeteners:Sweetenersofanykind,includingartificial,altertheactivityoftheintestinalfloracausingadisruptioninthebalanceofgoodtobadbacteria.16
• Processed foods: An overgrowth of fungus and yeast can be caused by a diet high in refinedcarbohydrates,thusleadingtoanovergrowthoftheunhealthybacteria,fungus,andyeast.17
• Agricultural chemicals and pesticides: Nearly all commercially available fruits and vegetables aretreatedwithpesticidesandherbicidesandarenearlyimpossibletoavoid.
Thisshort listof justfive lifestyle factors isbynomeansexhaustive, but just thesefivearesoprevalent inourculturethattheyarealmostcertainlyimpactingyourhealthrightnow.Therefore,itisalmostcertainthatyourgutflorabalanceisaffectedandwillcontinuetosufferunlessyoubecomeproactivetocorrectitonadailybasis.Infact,manyresearchersandhealthproviderssuggestthatsupplementingwithprobioticseverydaycanbemoreimportanttoyourhealththantakingadailymulti-vitamin.

But before you just go out to buy a probiotic product, there are some things you must know.
Not all Probiotics are the SameDue to theextremeacidicenvironmentof the stomachand the releaseofbile from thegallbladder, researchindicates that anywhere from 80-99% of traditional unprotected live probiotic cells will be killed off beforereaching the intestine.18Inorderforthegoodbacteriatoprovidetheirbeneficialeffectstoyou,theymustbeabletowithstandprocessingconditionsandalsobeviableinsufficientnumbersduringstorage.19Traditionalprobioticsupplementswillclaimbillionsofactivecellsperdoseontheirlabels,buttheydonotpromisetheyarealiveandwellastheyenteryourintestines.Somecompaniesclaimtobesuperiorwithaprocesscalled,“microencapsulation,”thatissupposedtoshieldtheprobioticsfromthedamagingeffectsofthestomachacid.

Fortunately, thereisasolution, andtheanswerliesinanexclusiveproprietarynaturalfermentationprocess.AtHumarianResearch Lab,wehavedeveloped themost advancedandeconomicalprobiotic formula anywhereon earth, Probonix.Thisproductisnotaboutalabelthatclaimsbillionsuponbillionsofactiveandlivebacteriathataredeadbeforetheyreachtheintestines.Probonixisabouteffectiveness,asithasbeendevelopedusingacutting-edgefermentationtechnologydevelopedbyresearcherstodeliverstableandviableprobioticbacteriainto your intestines.
Insteadofputtingbillionsofprobioticbacteriaintoapillandhopingsomeorganismsmakeittotheintestinesalive,we atHumarian focus ongetting theorganisms into the intestines safely and effectively. This exclusiveproprietaryprocessprotectseachlivecellfromtheharshbileandstomachacid.Similartohowaspecialcoatingprocessisusedformanymedicationsthatpreventthedrugsfrombeingactivateduntiltheyreachthesmallintestine,Probonix is saturated in a solution that places the individual bacteria in atemporary static state and protects them against the stomach acid. Only after they reach the intestines do they becomeactivated and provide their many health benefits. Once theorganismsinthisproductreachtheintestines, theyawakenfromtheirstateofhibernationandmultiply innumber, proliferatingthroughout the entire intestinal tract. This process dramatically enhances the survival and growth of bacteria over traditionalprobiotic supplements, since all other probiotic products relyon traditional encapsulation and not fermentation. Therefore,Probonix isthefirstandonlyprobioticproductofitskind.
