I AM GREEN BUILDING CHALLENGE tion

Title

Cool Assembly Hall

School Code :- 6278

Background to the problem

• The Assembly Hall is the main focal point for school activities : Assembly, Religious Instruction , School functions , physical education and is a social meeting place for students at lunch time and recess time.

Problem Statement Uncomfortable Hall

• Poor assembly hall design , material choice and layout , outdated fans and café activities creates heat and noise.

• The heat and noise makes an uncomfortable environment for guests , students and teachers leading to disinterest, restlessness , disruptions and general discomfort for all with a diminished response to the objectives of the exercise.

“ Students endure rather than enjoy ”

Problem 1 – High Temperatures

Unoccupied Hall 34°c. The temperature then elevates to 38°c when occupied with 526students and 45 staff members.

Problem 2 – High Noise Levels

• The noise level is exasperated by 6 electrically powered cooling fans contributing 35 decibels of noise

The factors above contribute to noise pollution in the hall

•the students’ body temperature , •heat radiated from the galvanize in the roof •heat generated by fan motors•cafeteria kitchen

The outdated industrial fans circulate all this heat throughout the hall

Source of Heat

Solutions

Solar Powered Extractor Fans-Benefits• Extracts the heat from within the hall and expels it through the roof into the open atmosphere • Uses no electricity and pays for itself• Reduces heat build-up and moisture• Decreases cooling costs• Fights mould and fungal decay•Reduces damaging condensation•Sleek slim line unit

Removal of industrial fans

• BENEFITS: • noise reduction • Lower electricity bill. Fans are 1/4 HP

consuming 2. 9Amps of electricity • Cost to remove :$500

SOLAR EXTRACTOR FAN AT WORK

COST INCLUDING INSTALATION:$28600.00

SOLUTIONS

BUBBLE HEAT RESISTANT BARRIER

•Benefits• Double layer of polyethylene bubble reflect up to 97% of radiant heat, less heat enters through roof. • Radiant Barriers are very easy to handle and install. Cost inclusive of installation $ 9043.00

BUBBLE HEAT RESISTANT BARRIER AT WORK

SOLUTIONS Heat Reflective Paint Applied To Existing Galvanise On Roof

Benefits : reflects the UV/ I.R. rays from the sun so the temperature of galvanise does not increase appreciably Cost inclusive of installation $ 2342.00

SOLUTION

Plants Placed in Hall•Benefit :The plants absorb the heat by the process transpiration and releases water vapour . This helps to create a cool atmosphere in the assembly hall . •It is aesthetically pleasing creating a cool green scene •Cost $500.00

Fund raisers to offset procurement costs

• Popcorn sale =$500

• Cake sales=$1000

• Dress down activity =$3000

• Christmas concert =$1500

• Raffle =$1500

• Bar-Be-Que =$10,000

OVERALL BENEFITS

• More comfortable hall manifested in a better learning environment.

• example of green building design at work to inspirer student body to greater environmental consciousness,

• Electricity bill reduced by 10% . • Organisational and project management skills

improved .
