I Stopped Going to Networking Events.

(And when you should, too.)

I used to be gung ho on networking events.

So much so, that I even wrote a book on going to networking events…

On the plus side, my networking event craze did help define my niche.

It gave me a great career topic to write about, and I learned how much I enjoy teaching and writing about career development for analysts.

But after defining my “why” like this, the opportunity cost of nights out became too steep.

I also starting meeting more people as a natural byproduct of my projects than through forced networking events.

The people I needed to meet were too busy working on their projects to go to networking events.

So, go to networking events! For now.

But once they serve their purpose of defining your “why,” re-adjust your networking efforts.
