Introduction to IA in Geography

The purpose of this assessment, which is common to SL and HL, is to assess students’ ability

to demonstrate the following in relation to the fieldwork research question.

Knowledge and understanding (assessment objective 1)—criteria A and D

Application and analysis (assessment objective 2)—criteria A and D

Synthesis and evaluation (assessment objective 3)—criteria D, E and F

Select, use and apply a variety of appropriate skills and techniques (assessment objective

4)—criteria B and C

Location, Location, Location.

Our Tour – Fieldwork locations

Above you will see the path of our tour around Berlin. We will be stopping at 10 sites and

taking measurements at 8 of those in total with a lunch break in between. The red marking

on the map shows the location of the Berlin Wall and the Death Strip. You will be spending

most of your time in the former East Berlin with the tour finishing off in the former West.

Transport between the sites will be on tram and Metro.

Fieldwork Methodology

At each site, we will stop and our tour guide, Nikolai, will give a talk about the area you are

standing in together with some information about the local history and geography, how it has

come to be like that, including improvements and possible counter protests. You are to listen

carefully to him, taking notes on what he says in the space provided. Once he has finished,

you will split off into small groups to conduct your surveys and take photos. There are no

interview possibilities with members of the public.

6. Revaler Strasse & Urban Spree

7. Entertainments Complex - corner of Helsingforser Strasse / Warschauer Strasse
