III. New projectsI. VIRGO

• Created in 2006 to boost research in cosmology by promoting synergies between:

Astrophysics

Particle and nuclear physics

Gravitation

Space sciences

• Promote technological development and transfer innovation

• ICCUB awarded in 2015: Unidad de Excelencia María de Maeztuin first call by Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO)

• Research largely driven by fundamental questions:• What are the origin and fate of the Universe?• Which are the ultimate constituents of the Universe?• Why does the Universe have its present appearance?

Knowledge Transfer

• Family of ASICs originated form our contributions to LHCb and CTA RO electronics: FLEXTOT ….

• New research projects for new applications: fast light detection

Medical applications: Nanosatellites:A transversal project of the IEEC (Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya: UPC,ICCUB,CSIC and UAB).

ICCUB possible contribution:• Detector• Electronics• Control• Data handling

MIRADAS

RIA, 03/10/2018, J. Trenado7

MIRADAS: Spectrograph multi-objeto (MOS) in the NIR domain (range 0,9 - 2,5 μm)m) with spectral resolution R = 20000 located at the folded-Cassegrain GTC focus.

MIRADAS selects targets from a 5 arcmin field of regard using up to 12 deployable probe arms with pick- off mirror optics, each feeding a 3.7 x 1.2 arcsec field of view to the spectrograph.

MIRADAS

Object not contained in any set

Set with 12 objectsAstronomical object → (x, y, prio)Determination of sets:● Minimum number of sets to observe

all the requested objects.

● Minimum number of sets to observe the objects with maximum priority.

GAIA

RIA, 03/10/2018, J. Trenado9

Gaia DR2 in Numbers (2nd data publication, April 2018)

● 52.000 M of measurements● 630.000 M of observations● 75TB of raw data● 100TB of results

● 1.693 M of stars● 1.332 M with distances and

movements● 1.382 M with colors● 7 M with radial velocities

The largest, most precisethree-dimensional map of our Galaxy

GAIA. ICCUB’s Contribution

RIA, 03/10/2018, J. Trenado10

Gaia Data Processing● DPAC: Data Processing and Analysis Consortium

● Daily Data Treatment:instrumentation diagnosis,preliminar results,initial calibrations.

● Cyclic Processing:astrometry, fotometry,espectroscopy, binaries,variability, astrophysics..

● Gaia Archive (2013-2022) led by ICCUB researchers (1st data release 2016

GAIA. ICCUB’s Contribution

RIA, 03/10/2018, J. Trenado11

CTA

• CTA: next generation ground-basedvery high-energy gamma-ray instrument. Its northern hemisphere site will belocated in the Palma Island, at the current Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, Canary Islands.

• The proposed array layout is composed by 4 LST and 15 MST.

CTA. ICCUB’s Contribution

We contribute mainly in 3 aspects: physics, data and electronics.

• Physics: simulations to optimize the CTA configuration based on phenomenology observed in gamma-ray binaries and contributions to the Transient Key Science Project of CTA.

• Data: from our experience with LHCb, we have helped the CTA community to test the use of DIRAC as the software that will take care of the distributed computing in CTA.

• Electronics: developed three Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), the amplifier ACTA and the pre-amplifier PACTA and the Trigger L0. They are ASICs for SiPM readout.

VIRGO. ICCUB’s Contribution

RIA, 03/10/2018, J. Trenado17

● Laser Interferometer, 2 arms 3km each.

● Detection of gravitational waves generated till 60 Mpc (~200M light years).

● Continuous data aquisition>50MB/s for a ~1 year,~1PB of data.

● Data processing in real time (alerts) + subsequent extended processing.

● Similarities with Gaia/DPAC – also with LHCb Knowledge transfer, knowledge learnt by experience, techniques...

● Contributions: Software a data manegment improvement, contributions in instrumentation under analysis.
