ICONS So you’ve researched your ICON and created a brilliant biography…

You’ve got inside the mind of your chosen ICON by conducting an interview with them, revealing their thoughts and feelings…

Now you are in the perfect position to plan, draft, edit and present your PERSUASIVE LETTER…

Even if you have completed a letter, you can always go back and revise what you have done if you want to.

I often have my first effort as a rough draft, then I revise that until I am happy with my final piece.

Whenever we write anything, there are 3 things that we should ask ourselves:

Think T. A. P What are we writing? (TYPE OF TEXT/TOPIC)

Who are we writing for? (AUDIENCE)

Why are we writing? (PURPOSE)

REVIEW: The purpose of persuasive essay is to convince the reader to believe or to do something.

A persuasive piece must provide specific and convincing evidence. You need to be well informed about your topic and present your information

using the appropriate tone and formal style.

Think T. A. P What are we writing? (TYPE OF TEXT/TOPIC)

Who are we writing for? (AUDIENCE)

Why are we writing? (PURPOSE)

T: PERSUASIVE LETTER (FORMAL STYLE)

A: Miss Luckhurst and panel of judges

P: To convince the panel that your ICON is worthy of the title ‘ENDOWED ICON 2020’!

Whatever writing we do, we use

TECHNIQUES which suit that style of wrtitng.

So in a fictional story, we use LITERARY DEVICES/TECHNIQUES such as imagery, similes and metaphors and personification.

These create effective characters, settings and plots.

IN PERSUASIVE writing, there are lots of TECHNIQUES you can add to make your persuasion particularly powerful!

DESCRIBES WHAT IT IS AND AN EXAMPLE OF IT IN USE.

Can you put together a series of persuasive

 THINK: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PERSUADE SOMEONE?

 WHAT IS PERSUASION? Think about toddlers,

younger and older children…As they are

not generally in charge, this group are

constantly trying to persuade the adults around them in one

way or another…

They use:REPETITION,

OPINION AS FACT, SUPERLATIVES and EMOTIVE LANGUAGE!

They are masters of persuasion…

REPETITION: Please, please, please, please, please, please…(You get the picture)

Exactly what is says on the tin…repeating a key point.

THIS IS DEVELOPED INTO A MORE SOPHISTICATED TECHNIQUE

CALLED RULE OF 3/TRIPLES (see next slide)

OPINION AS FACT: These trainers are the freshest around.

Obviously, everybody wants them.

Presenting beliefs as if they are factual truths

SUPERLATIVES: These trainers are the best on the market.

Adjective which implies the highest or lowest quality (best or worst)

EMOTIVE LANGUAGE: Without these stunning trainers, I will

undoubtedly be left behind, languishing at the back without any hope.

Words & phrases to make the reader feel something
