Identifying, scaffolding, and credentialing skills in an ever-changing digital environment

AbstractHow do we identify, scaffold, and credential skills in an ever-changing digital environment? In this keynote, Doug Belshaw will discuss work he began at Mozilla around Open Badges, as well as the findings from his doctoral thesis on The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies. Doug will argue that digital literacies are plural, context-dependent, and socially negotiated. He will give practical examples of ways digital skills can be scaffolded through badge-based learning pathways, and show how colleagues can get started immediately after the keynote!

2. What does it mean to be digitally literate?
3. What actually is 'digital literacy'? ?

Digital badges have been around for ages
...but they’re difficult to verify and they’re easy to copy

This is how it works
A person or organisation issues a badge
Earner chooses to put it in their backpack
Collections of badges can be shared to unlock new opportunities and possibilities.

Badge pathways
Cow paths?
Prescriptive learning pathways are those that are created ahead of time and chart a series of activities towards a pre-determined goal.
Descriptive learning pathways, on the other hand, are those that are created after learners have reached their goal. As the name suggests, they represent what has already taken place.

Learners are already doing their own thing. Let’s identify , scaffold, and credential that.
