James 2:14-25

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Slide#3

James 2:14-25

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

Slide#4

James 2:14-26

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Slide#5

James 2:14-26

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Slide#6

1. Work Produced by Faith.

Slide#7

A. Work vs. Faith – Are we saved by works or by faith?

Slide#8

Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.

Slide#9

1 Thessalonians 1:3

We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Slide#10

Ergon=“Natural work – working but not knowing that you’re working.”

Slide#11

James 2:17

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action (ergou), is dead (non-existent).

Slide#12

Galatians 5:6

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself (verb form of ergou) through love.

Slide#13

Gary Halloway

Faith cannot be seen without action. Faith is seen only in deeds of love and compassion. It is always wrong to separate faith and deeds. This separation has led to much misunderstanding throughout history . . . Paul, like James, does not separate faith from action.

Slide#14

James 2:24

You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Slide#15

2. Do You Have Faith?

Slide#16

Craig Keener

“Genuine faith is a reality on which one stakes one’s life, not merely passive assent to doctrine”

Slide#17

Brent Curtis, John Eldridge

Practical Agnostics

“Perhaps God will come through, perhaps he won’t, so I’ll be hanged if I’ll live as though he had to come through. I’ll hedge my bets and if he does show up, so much the better” (Sacred Romance).

Cognitive Dissonance

Slide#19

Slide#20

Hebrews 12:2

2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecterof faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Slide#21

James 1:6-8

6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Slide#22

2 Timothy 3:5

Having a form of godliness but denying its power.

Slide#23

2 Timothy 3:7

Always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.

Slide#24

1 Timothy 1:7

They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

Slide#25

Two Examples:

Abraham – Trusting God enough to obey, no matter what.

Slide#26

James 2:22

You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith and his actions were made complete by what he did.

Slide#27

Two Examples:

Rahab – Trusted that God was right, and sided with him.

Slide#28

Believed but so what?

Slide#29

James 2:26

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Slide#30

James 2:19

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.

Slide#31

3. Is Your Faith a Joy?

Slide#32

1 Thessalonians 1:6b-8a

You welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia – your faith in God has become known everywhere.

Slide#33

Do you have faith?

What does that mean?
