WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL TRAINING?

• From the EAC (Engineering Accreditation Council) manual 2012…

1. “It is an exposure to professional engineering practice in anengineering-practice environment”

2. “Industrial training shall be for a minimum of 8 weeks ofcontinuous training.

3. “One credit hour is allocated for every two weeks of trainingsubject to a maximum of six credit hours”.

4. “The training shall be adequately structured, supervised andrecorded in log books/report.

5. “The industrial training must be conducted before the finalsemester”

FROM THE EAC MANUAL 2012…

1. “Familiarity with all common engineering processes isessential and exposure at a practical level to a widevariety of processes is required at a level appropriate tothe young professional”

2. “…….it is clearly desirable for students to get a feel of theskills involved, however, the central aim is to achieveappreciation, not to acquire craft skills.”

3. “……..many of the latest processes and large scale orcostly operations can only be the subject of observationor demonstration, and visits to engineering works maybe helpful in many such cases.”

OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE..

• Expose students to engineering practices in the industrial sectorunder the supervision of experienced engineer or technicalstaff.

• Expose students on matters relating to human relations,engineering management, human resource management andthe like in the industrial sector.

PROGRAMME OUTCOME MAPPED TO INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

• The Engineer and Society: (PO6)

Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assesssocietal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequentresponsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice;

• Ethics (PO8)

Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics andresponsibilities and norms of engineering practice;

• Communication (PO9)

Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with theengineering community and with society at large, such as being ableto comprehend and write effective reports and designdocumentation, make effective presentations, and give and receiveclear instructions;

SYNOPSIS OF LI (REFER ACADEMIC HANDBOOK)

• Compulsory before graduation

• When: After Semester 6 (3rd year, 2nd Semester) for a 10-week period.

• Where: At the Company which has been selected by the students

• Evaluation based on:

• Observation by company supervisors

• Observation by appointed faculty supervisors

• Student Logbook

• Final Report

Common problems in LI

• Student didn’t or can’t register in SMP but still proceed to do LI

• Student register SMP but didn’t key in student online database

• Student register LI but didn’t got for LI

• Student change LI placement after 2nd weeks during LI starts.

• Student didn’t notify company properly to reject extra offer.

Must put email of your supervisors!!

Daily Log Book

The Purpose Of Daily Log Book

It should be reminded that the daily log book is considered as

a mobile library in which all kinds of information obtained

during the training are stored. Hence, it is very important that

the book is kept in order for future reference during the

preparation of the report. The filled-up log book is of

student’s property and need not be submitted to the faculty.

Things To Be Reported In The Log BookOnly important items should be included in the log book. For instance;

1.The check-in and check-out time, being specified by the organization

2.All events or type of tasks carried out during morning and afternoon hours

3.Problems that arise if any

4.Weather conditions; sunny, cloudy, flooded, etc

5.All kinds of technical aspect such as the number of workers, different types of machines used, construction materials, etc

6.Name of supervisor on duty

7.In case of student absence, a medical certificate or letter of request should be attached accordingly
