MORANBAH AND ISAAC REGIONAL COUNCIL OVERVIEW
Moranbah is the commercial powerhouse of Isaac Regional Council (IRC).
The township is the central service hub for the Bowen Basin’s multi-billion dollar
coal mining industry.
A key snapshot of IRC boasts mining and agricultural investment, with the
region contributing $5.8 billion to Queensland’s Gross State Product – based on
a population of only 24,670. Moranbah has a population of about 9500.
Mining is the largest industry employer with 24 operating coal mines in the
region, producing 63% of Queensland’s saleable coal.
Mining generates $1 billion in royalty payments.
Future new coal mines near Moranbah include Olive Downs -- $1 billion
open cut mining venture by Pembroke Resources expected to create 960
operational jobs and produce 14 million tonnes of coal per year.
Byerwen Coal Project $1.76 billion Joint Venture between JFE Steel and
QCoal (350 construction jobs and more than 500 ongoing jobs) to
produce 10 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year
Agriculture (beef and cropping) makes up 11.32% of registered business
in the region, with $212 million from livestock and $90.8 million from crops.
The Queensland Agricultural Land Audit, identifies two important
agricultural areas within the Isaac LGA. An important agricultural area is
described as an area that has all the requirements for agriculture to be
successful and sustainable, is part of a critical mass of land with similar
characteristics and is strategically significant to the region or the State.
The IRC spans an area of 58,870 kms from the coast to the coal field and is
1000km north-west of Brisbane.
